After brief respite, repo men may be busy again

There?s been plenty of talk about the U.S. housing crisis, foreclosures rising to record levels during the recent recession. But car buyers also struggled to pay their bills and keep the repo man from showing up at their door.

The good news is that loan delinquencies fell sharply since the depths of the nation?s economic downturn and repossessions have likewise dropped sharply. In fact, they hit a 12-year low in 2012, says Manheim Consulting. But another study warns that the trend might soon reverse itself.

For the first time since 2009, the number of 60-day auto loan delinquencies increased during the fourth quarter of 2012, warns Experian Automotive, and with lenders writing more of the risky, subprime car loans that slammed the industry during the recession, the repo man could soon get busy again.

The Detroit Bureau: Audi set to reveal new plug-in version of little A3

For the time being, he?s sitting on his hands, repossessions fell by 27.6% during the fourth quarter, says a new Experian report, accounting for just 0.46% of outstanding auto loans. That was true no matter who issued the loan, banks, credit unions, ?captive? or automaker-operated finance companies, or other lenders.

?Overall, our Q4 analysis shows that the auto lending market is extremely healthy,? says Melinda Zabritski, director of automotive credit for Experian Automotive. ?Of course, you never want to see an increase in delinquencies, but when you take a step back and look at the market compared to where it was three years ago, we still have remarkable stability.?

For now. But Experian?s new report also raises some flags. Those 60-day delinquencies are up, albeit ever so slightly, from 0.72% during the fourth quarter of 2011 to 0.74% during the final three months of 2012. That was nonetheless the first rise since Q4 2009.

The Detroit Bureau: NYTimes Admits Mistakes - But Says Tesla Also at Fault

That?s enough to worry some observers, including Manheim?s chief economist Tom Webb who predicts repossessions could increase by 26.9% through 2015.

Industry observers say that if this happens the industry may have only itself to blame, however. In the years leading up to the recession, lenders seemed to be willing to offer cash to just about anybody. Indeed, Japanese automaker Mitsubishi nearly went broke when it was burned by a NINJA loan program aimed at attracting young, first-time buyers. That?s short for No Income, No Jobs or Assets, and many of the folks who fit that description were pleased to get a free ride for a year ? turning back the keys when the first payments were due.

Even with more conventional loans terms were loosened significantly, much as they were by housing lenders, creating an industry nightmare when the economy collapsed.

But automakers weren?t much happier with what followed. Lenders went to the other extreme. At times even potential car buyers with top credit scores could not line up loans. And the lease deals that had become a major part of the industry all but completely dried up for everyone. The lack of lending helped drive the U.S. automotive market into its biggest downturn since the Great Depression.

The Detroit Bureau: Prepping the Next Ford Mustang

On the positive side, that meant only the most qualified and responsible customers were signing for loans. And, in turn, delinquencies plunged by 31.8% between 2009 and 2012 ? last year only 1.3 million vehicles being repossessed, according to Manheim, the lowest level in a dozen years.

But even as repos fell, lenders were loosening terms last year, a factor in the unexpectedly strong revival of the U.S. automotive market which soared to 14.5 million last year. Even more credit will be needed to fuel an anticipated surge that could see 15.5 million for 2013.

The question is whether lenders will return to the practices that caught up with them during the recession or if more qualified buyers will re-enter the market. The slight rise in fourth-quarter repossessions gives reason for economists like Manheim?s Webb to be worried.

TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition Review: Math in Color!

The new TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition isn't the first color-screen graphing calculator. It isn't even TI's first color graphing calculator, a distinction claimed by the TI-Nspire CX and its sibling the TI-Nspire CX CAS. However, the TI-84+CSE, as we're abbreviating it, is a major milestone in the 17-year-old TI-83 and TI-84 Plus family of calculators. Although it retains the look and feel of the TI-84 Plus operating system, and keeps the familiar case shape and key layout, the outstanding feature of the TI-84+CSE is a bright, glossy color LCD screen. No longer will math and programs need to squeeze into 96 by 64 monochrome pixels; the new screen is 320x240 and can display 65,000 different colors. More »

Florida fireballs renew calls for early warning system (+video)

Florida fireballs lit up the night sky Sunday. The fireballs (aka meteors) were seen by more than 60 people in Florida. Coming after the huge meteor in Russia, there are new calls for an early warning system to protect the Earth from giant meteors and asteroids.

By Staff,?CSMonitor.com / February 20, 2013

Fireballs (aka meteors) were seen by dozens of people in Florida Sunday.

A fireball, caused by a falling meteor, was seen by spectators from Miami to Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday evening.

The streaking meteor was small compared to the one that hit Russia last week, but it was a bright light in the Florida sky ? and was captured on video.

?This one wasn?t grain-of-sand size, which what most of them are,? Thomas Webber, director of the Museum of Science and History?s Bryan-Gooding Planetarium told the Florida Times Union in Jacksonville. ?When we get something a little bigger, that maybe has a silicate coating that ablates off as it travels though the atmosphere and takes some of the heat with it, they can appear much brighter and last a lot longer.?

More than 60 people reported seeing the meteor on the American Meteor Society?s ?Fireball Log.?

They posted comments including, "I saw flames coming from it as it was falling and then it burned out. It was very distintive as a flaming, falling ball."

The Florida fireball, coming on the heels of the huge meteor that fell in Russia last week and an asteroid that buzzed past the Earth from a distance of just 17,200 miles, is raising awareness of how many objects fall to Earth each day.

The American Meteor Society notes that hundreds, if not thousands, of meteors fall to Earth daily. Most burn up in the atmosphere. But larger meteors, or asteroids, could pose a threat to life on Earth. Recent events have renewed calls for an early warning system, including a telescope in space dedicated to finding asteroids.?As The Christian Science Monitor reported recently:

"In their hunt to identify such near-Earth objects wider than half a mile across ? potential civilization busters if one were to strike Earth ? astronomers have cataloged about 95 percent of the objects in this size class during the past 15 years.

But they have found less than 1 percent of the objects 100 feet across or larger, a class that includes the asteroid 2012 DA14. This object flitted past Earth Friday afternoon Eastern Standard Time a scant 17,200 miles from Earth ? a record for a known object of its size."

On Friday, Lamar Alexander (R) of Tennessee and chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, issued a statement regarding the two events that noted that the committee will hold hearings in the near future to explore ways to improve efforts to detect asteroids as well as to deal with any deemed a potential threat to the planet.

Discussing the recent asteroid flyby and the Russian meteor, Prof. Michio Kaku of City College of New York, told CBS News: "This could be a game changer," in terms of getting government support for better tracking of these objects. "We need an insurance policy. Inevitably, we're going to get hit with a big one. Look at the moon: it's pockmarked ... so we need to have an early warning system."

Academy Awards: Oscar-Nominated Songs That Should Have Won ...

These Songs Were All Just Travelin' Thru

It?s happened to so many of us who devote all the days (and evenings) of our lives to watching the litany of awards shows that come our way this time of year: you?re rooting for your favorite to take the statue, but when the winner is announced another guy, gal, song, artist or act wins. And you want to scream, cry or take to drinking (we do all three) because you know in your gut that another song should have secured that prize. Happens all the time, right?

Well, Hollywood?s big movie awards are less than a week away, and we?re still obsessing over the music. As we mull over this year?s Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song, we can?t help but wonder about what should have been from Oscars past. Sure, they may get it right most of the time, but sometimes the Academy misses the mark (as it did often in the early 2000s). Below we look back at the last 15 years and make a case for five of our favorite Oscar-nominated songs that should have landed the little bald dude, but didn?t.

Should Have Won: ?I Don?t Want to Miss A Thing? from Armageddon, 1998

Since you can?t win an Oscar for being the Most Awful Movie of the Year (or Ever), you might as well get to compete in a few other categories. With all of director Michael Bay?s stars-and-stripes-waving-in-the-wind scenes and meticulously-choreographed, slow-motion, mid-America montages, it would have seemed downright un-American, we suppose, for Armageddon not get some stateside awards attention. So why not let an icon like Diane Warren (who wrote the music and the lyrics) walk away with a statuette for the schmaltzy ballad that happens to be the very best thing about this disastrous disaster flick? If you can get past the image of a young Ben Affleck parading animal crackers on Liv Tyler?s bare midriff and belly button (seriously) while Liv?s dad Steven Tyler sings to the seduction of his daughter on a prairie somewhere, you know you just love Warren?s song ? even if it is a love/hate relationship. Sometimes cheeseball songs makes us feel better than, well, cheese or chicken soup, and we?re not ashamed to admit it. Besides, who remembers anything about a cartoon called The Prince of Egypt today, anyway? Anybody? C?mon now!

Winner: ?When You Believe? from The Prince of Egypt

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius applied for firearm licenses for six more guns weeks before the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp inside his house on Feb. 14, according to official records obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The applications were made on Jan. 22, just over three weeks before Pistorius shot his girlfriend dead in his home with a licensed 9 mm pistol.

The athlete says the killing of Steenkamp was accidental as he thought she was a dangerous intruder inside his bathroom. Prosecutors say the double-amputee athlete intended to kill his girlfriend and have charged him with premediated murder.

In details obtained from the South African Police Service's National Firearms Center and given over the telephone, Pistorius applied for licenses for a Smith & Wesson model 500 revolver, a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, a Vector .223-caliber rifle and three shotguns: A Mossberg shotgun, a Maverick shotgun and a Winchester shotgun.

The details were given to the AP by two separate officials at the government department. They refused to give their names because they were not authorized to speak to the media, although the records are available to the public.

Pistorius registered the 9 mm handgun used in the Valentine's Day killing for self-defense, the firearm center officials said. The six outstanding applications listed those guns for Pistorius' private collection.

The six recent firearm license applications were sent back to a police and firearms station in Johannesburg to be reapplied for on Monday, four days after Steenkamp's killing, the officials said. No reasons were given why the applications were sent back to be refiled.

Pistorius' license for the 9 mm Parabellum pistol that was used in Steenkamp's shooting was issued to Pistorius on Sept. 10, 2010 on appeal after an initial application in 2008 was rejected. One of the officials said the rejection was procedural as Pistorius had passed his competency test and had no criminal record.

The 9 mm pistol license card was printed on Sept. 16, 2010 and received by Pistorius on Sept. 27, 2010, the officials said.

Under South Africa's strict gun laws, you need a license for every firearm you own. An applicant must undergo a competency test ? which includes gun safety training ? before a license can be issued.

Pistorius would also have had to provide three character referees, one of the firearms center officials said, one of whom must be a family member and one of whom must be a neighbor.

Why Wayne LaPierre Loves Hurricanes and Natural Disasters

160384795

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre listens during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in January.

Wayne LaPierre understands the power of dystopia. For the National Rifle Association?s CEO, that dystopia?or more specifically, the fear that it conjures?is the stuff that grows membership, funding, and influence. And for much of his 22-year tenure leading the NRA, he has conjured those fears with the help of a familiar enemy: the U.S. government.

The NRA has long argued that American citizens needed to be armed to fend off some future American dictatorship that would one day ?come for the guns.? Charlton Heston wasn?t subtle in his ?cold dead hands? pledge in 2000. In 1995, LaPierre called federal employees ?jack-booted government thugs? and claimed that they were ?wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms to attack law-abiding?citizens.? Or, if it wasn?t Uncle Sam knocking down doors, it would be some other totalitarian government. While most of us saw Red Dawn as a cheap action flick, LaPierre saw a possible future, saying there ?was nothing unrealistic in that dramatization? of Cubans seizing our guns. ?It can happen here,? he warned.

But that is yesterday?s dystopia. In a sense, LaPierre?s argument fell victim to the NRA?s own success. It?s hard to argue that the federal government is coming to seize your guns when that same government is working overtime to enshrine the power of the Second Amendment. During the Bush administration, Attorney General John Ashcroft pushed for an expanded interpretation of the Second Amendment, and the White House helped push through special protections for the gun industry. As George W. Bush?s administration furthered an ardent pro-gun agenda in sync with the NRA?s position, LaPierre had to find a new strategy.

So today, LaPierre isn?t spending so much time warning of an overweening, tyrannical federal government; he is more interested in social collapse. The shift can be dated to late 2005, specifically the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In the 1990s, LaPierre had noted the role ?armed citizens played in stabilizing a community against the crime and looting that followed in the wake of Hurricane Andrew that same year.? But it was subtheme, never a drumbeat. After all, with President Clinton pushing for monumental gun violence laws, including the Assault Weapons Ban and the Brady Bill, LaPierre?s specter of federal government had some purchase.

After Katrina, the ?fear of social collapse? argument moved to center stage. A pamphlet invoked Katrina to warn that you can be ?reduced to the final and purest form of self-reliance in the face of terrifying anarchy.? The dystopia LaPierre has been peddling since then is less an all-powerful U.S. government than a government that is helpless to protect you.

LaPierre?s pivot was on full display in an article he wrote last week for the Daily Caller. After describing the ?hellish world? left in Hurricane Sandy?s wake, he goes on to catalog his fears: ?Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone Criminals. These are perils we are sure to face?not just maybe.? But the full conversion comes five paragraphs later, when he writes: ?Gun owners are not buying firearms because they anticipate a confrontation with the government. Rather, we anticipate confrontations where the government isn?t there?or simply doesn?t show up in time.? Forget totalitarianism. Now we need to fear total anarchy.

Of course, LaPierre has a fully loaded plan. His 2011 book, Safe: How To Protect Yourself, Your Family, and Your Home, was reviewed by Publisher?s Weekly as a ?useful addition to anyone?s Go Bag.? Moving away from a focus on its own merchandise, in 2011 the NRA began selling an entire line of ?Survivor Gear? designed to equip you for catastrophe. For $139.95 you can buy an NRA machete designed to give you ?force for chopping and a naturally relaxed wrist position for thrusting.? In keeping with the ?prepper? craze, the NRA is trying to position itself as preparing citizens for catastrophes when you cannot rely on government.

Even after the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, LaPierre doubled down on his disaster preparedness message. In a little-noticed line from his initial news conference after Newtown, he warned that a ?hurricane, terrorist attack, or some other natural or man-made disaster? could set the stage ?for a national nightmare of violence and victimization.? At his testimony at the Senate Judiciary Committee in January, he distanced himself from his older anti-government line and argued that guns are ?relevant and essential to ?fundamental human survival? because ?if a tornado hits, a hurricane hits, if a riot occurs? then people ?are going to be out there alone, and the only way they are going to protect themselves in the cold, in the dark, is with a firearm.?

In the end, LaPierre doesn?t really care which dystopia he is selling. Until Congress appears poised to pass gun-control legislation with even a hint of seriousness, LaPierre will still be looking on the horizon for the next storm front that will return us to a lawless state of nature. A few years ago he had the same fervor when he hyped fears that the Holocaust could happen in the United States. Regardless of the apocalyptic scenario, LaPierre always has the same answer: more guns.

Hirsute in a huff over Gillette ads in Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Hate that hair? In Brazil, beware.

A self-regulatory council for Brazil's advertising industry is looking into complaints against razor maker Gillette for running body-shaving commercials.

Council spokesman Eduardo Correa says 20 consumers have filed complaints that the campaign "encourages prejudice against hairy men."

The online commercials show beautiful women telling men they should shave their chests to please their girlfriends.

The council's ethical committee is expected to rule on the case in 30 days.

Elaine Moreira is a spokeswoman for Gillette parent company Procter & Gamble. She says the campaign was "an irreverent way to say that women prefer hairless men and that the company never meant to offend consumers."

British premier lays wreath at India massacre site

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Britain's prime minister laid a mourning wreath Wednesday at the site of a notorious 1919 massacre of hundreds of Indians by British colonial forces, calling the killings "a shameful event in British history."

David Cameron was the first British prime minister to make a gesture of condolence at Jallianwala Bagh in the northwest city of Amritsar, but stopped short of issuing a formal apology for his country's actions 94 years earlier.

"This is a deeply shameful event in British history ? one that Winston Churchill rightly described at the time as 'monstrous,'" Cameron wrote in the visitors' book at the site. "We must never forget what happened here. And in remembering we must realize that the United Kingdom stands for the right of peaceful protest around the world."

The park was the site of an attack by British colonial troops on unarmed Indians attending a rally calling for independence. More than 300 Indians were killed during the massacre, which galvanized the national independence movement and marked the beginning of the end of Britain's rule over the Indian subcontinent.

Queen Elizabeth II visited the same site in 1997 and laid a wreath there. She called the killings "distressing."

Cameron's visit to Amritsar came at the end of his trip to India. The trip was aimed at boosting trade and investment between the two countries in the areas of energy, infrastructure, insurance, banking and retail.

Stop focusing on the divorce and separations which are actually very minute compared to the statistics of the married and coupled. Marriage and relationships are not stable cos of faithfulness, there is more to marriage than sex and faithfulness. There is no normal faithfulness in this world, its either one is too broke to flirt, or too bound to religion or both. It is just natural to flirt, it is nature's command. I am happy to inform you that I can not be faithful, will never be and I am not expecting anyone else to be. This truth, sets me free, cos nothing will ever surprise me.

For most people, it really depends. Most cheat/are unfaithful because of two things 1.) they have the "balls" to do it . 2.) The opportunity has availed itself.
Most people who are faithful can be grouped into the "other" category i.e they have no choice or the opportunity hasn't availed itself.
The percentage of people who actually "choose" to be faithful, knowing they can get anyone out there is less than 0.00001%

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) ? Foreign investors credited for driving the real estate market here in Southern California could be making it more difficult for local buyers ? at least in the short term, according to analysts.

KNX 1070?s Bob Brill reports while prices are on the rise, experts are predicting the recent trend of all-cash sales will ultimately benefit buyers across the spectrum.

As foreclosures plunge statewide ? down as much as 60 percent in January from December ? median housing prices for the six-county Southland region jumped by nearly 25 percent in the same month to $321,000, according to DataQuik.

The jump in prices comes amid an influx of foreign money from Asia and the Middle East from investors who are looking for what they believe is a safer bet than the stockicon1 Housing Market Boom? Local Home Buyers Compete With Foreign Cash ? CBS Los Angeles market.

One Rancho Cucamonga man told the Los Angeles Times he has placed over 200icon1 Housing Market Boom? Local Home Buyers Compete With Foreign Cash ? ?[We] put in offers on a bunch of homes that we liked right from the get-go, put an offer in and then our offer gets rejected because they select an all-cash offer,? said Bill Sepe, who added that offers have typically come in around $25,000 or higher than the sales price just so the buyer can ?get in and rent it out.?

Jeff Lazerson, president of MortgageGrader.com, said the trend shows what the investmenticon1 Housing Market Boom? Local Home Buyers Compete With Foreign Cash ? CBS Los Angeles world thinks of U.S. real estate.

?Chinese, Taiwanese investors, and some money coming in from the Middle East,? said Lazerson. ?It?s really amazing how much is gravitating this way because they view the U.S. real estate market as just being very, very safe.?

The regions that were hit hardest by the housing downturn such as Riverside County and much of the Inland Empire could soon see a revitalized housing market amid a combination of cheap homes, investor cash and shrinking inventory, according to analysts.

Lazerson said he expects the foreign buying spree to eventually make it easier for new buyers to enter the market.

?Think about the low tide and the high tide, as property values in general go up,? Lazerson said. ?There?s more people that can actually sell their property and move up or move across.?

John Brennan: From Mecca to Washington

In 1853, the British explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton visited Mecca. Since Mecca was and is off limits to non-Muslims on pain of death, Burton passed himself off as a Muslim by undergoing circumcision and disguising himself as a Pashtun. "Nothing could save a European detected by the populace, or one who after pilgrimage declared himself an unbeliever," Burton wrote.

Three hundred and fifty years earlier, the Italian adventurer Ludovico di Varthema became the first non-Muslim to enter Mecca since the Muslim conquest. Ludovico had enlisted as a mercenary and succeeded in passing as a Mamluk, one of the white slave soldiers of the Sultanate, who had been converted to Islam. Ludovico was eventually caught out as a Christian, but escaped after a love affair with one of the Sultan's wives.

Other Christians had visited Mecca, but always disguised as Muslims. The British cabin boy Joseph Pitts, captured by Muslim slavers and forcibly converted to Islam, visited Mecca, before managing to return home and return to his religion. Similar accounts were told by other European Christian slaves.

In 1979, hundreds of Islamists using weapons smuggled in a coffin seized the Grand Mosque of Mecca. The Saudi military, commanded by the sons of important men, rather than by competent men, proved absolutely hopeless in fighting them. So instead they turned to the French.

The French commandos of GIGN were expert at dealing with terrorist crises, but they were not Muslim and so could not be allowed into Mecca. The solution was simple. The Frenchmen underwent a rapid conversion to Islam and the siege of the Great Mosque commenced. The conversion did not take hold, but the principle remained. An infidel could not enter Mecca, even to save the House of Saud.

During his time as the CIA Station Chief in Saudi Arabia, John Brennan spoke of marveling "at the majesty of the Hajj and the devotion of those who fulfilled their duty as Muslims by making that pilgrimage." If Brennan did indeed visit Mecca during the Hajj, then he could have only done it by converting to Islam, like John Pitts, or pretending to have done so, like the GIGN commandos.

John Guandolo, a former FBI agent and Islam expert, has alleged that the conversion took place during Brennan's time in Saudi Arabia. And he also alleges that this conversion has been confirmed by other American officials who were in Saudi Arabia at the time. These allegations are especially explosive as Brennan has moved up through the ranks to become Obama's nominee to head the CIA.

Guandolo's allegation goes beyond the question of religion. Rather he alleges that the conversion was part of an espionage recruitment process. In an interview with Tom Trento of The United West, he said, "Mr. Brennan did convert to Islam when he served in a senior official capacity in Saudi Arabia. His conversion to Islam was the culmination of a counter-intelligence operation against him to recruit him."

The Soviet Union recruited spies by convincing them of the virtues of Communism. Saudi Arabia might well recruit its infidel agents by convincing them of the worth of Islam. There is of course no way to know what is in Brennan's heart. But while we may not know what Brennan believes, as John Guandolo has pointed out, we do know what he has done.

Brennan's supposed conversion to Islam was only the third of two other points that the former FBI agent argued make him unfit for duty. The first is that Brennan has developed links with the Muslim Brotherhood and that he has brought "known leaders of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood into the government in positions to advise the US Government on counterterrorism strategy as well as the overall quote unquote War on Terror." And the second is that Brennan reduces the War on Terror to Al Qaeda.

While Brennan did not innovate either of these two approaches, if he was indeed recruited by the Saudis, then they may be more than mere cluelessness. It's not unusual for military and intelligence officials to visit Saudi Arabia and then leave it repeating the classic Saudi talking points about Islam as a stabilizing influence on the region and Israel as a destabilizing influence.

There are countless generals and diplomats who robotically insist that Bin Laden must not be referred to as a Muslim to diminish his influence and that the Muslim Brotherhood and other political Islamists are the only hope for countering the violent Islamism of Al Qaeda. The fundamental question is whether such disinformation is spread out of ignorance, or out of knowledge.

That is the final question that Guandolo raises about John Brennan. "The fact that foreign intelligence service operatives recruited Mr. Brennan when he was in a very sensitive and senior US Government position in a foreign country means that he is either a traitor, which I'm not saying, but that's one of the options, and he did this all unwillingly and unknowingly ,or he did this unwittingly, which means that he is naive and does not have the ability to discern, to understand how to walk in those environments, which makes him completely unfit to be the Director of Central Intelligence."

What is problematic in a general or a senator is even more troubling in the Director of the CIA. Military men are expected to be somewhat direct and take things as they are. But the director of an intelligence agency is expected to see threats where no one else does, to test the waters and look past the obvious. And if he cannot do that, then he is simply not qualified. And that is the larger point that John Guandolo makes.

Whether or not Brennan had a moment of submission on the road to Mecca or whether he is simply acting as a useful idiot for the people who perpetrated the attacks of September 11, he is not qualified to be the point man in the War on Terror. As the military side of the war draws to a close with a defeat in Afghanistan, the Central Intelligence Agency will take on a greater degree of importance in the fight against Islamic terrorism.

During the Cold War, the CIA was often infiltrated by the KGB, nullifying America's intelligence capabilities in the Cold War. It would be a terrible shame if history repeated itself with Islam in the War on Terror.

Crowds gather for pope's Sunday blessing

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square for Pope Benedict XVI's first Sunday window blessing since his stunning retirement announcement, and the second-to-last before he leaves the papacy.

The traditional noon appointment normally attracts a few thousand pilgrims and tourists, but city officials were expecting as many as 150,000 people to flock to the vast cobblestone square for one of their last chances to see the pontiff before he relinquishes his stewardship of the Roman Catholic church and its nearly 1.2 billion members.

"We wanted to wish him well," said Amy Champion, a tourist from Wales. "It takes a lot of guts to take the job and even more guts ... to quit."

From Sunday evening, the pope will be out of the public eye for an entire week: A meditation service at the Vatican marks the beginning of the traditional Lenten period of reflection and prayer.

Rome threw on extra buses and subway trains to help deal with the expected crush of people, and offered free shuttle vans for the elderly and disabled.

Benedict shocked the world last week by announcing he is resigning on Feb. 28 ? the first papal abdication in 600 years. While cardinals elect his successor next month in a secrecy-steeped conclave in the Sistine Chapel, the ailing, 85-year-old Benedict will be in retreat at the Holy See's summer estate in the hills southeast of Rome.

After several weeks, he is expected to move into a monastery being refurbished for him behind Vatican City's walls and lead a largely cloistered life.

The Vatican hasn't announced the date of the start of the conclave, but said on Saturday that it might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date it can be launched under current rules. Benedict would have to sign off on any earlier date, an act that would be one of the last of his nearly eight-year papacy.

Meanwhile, the first cardinals started arriving in Rome to begin a period of intense politicking among the "princes of the church" to decide who are the leading candidates to be the next pope. Guinea-born Archbishop Robert Sarah, a cardinal who leads the Vatican's charity office, told reporters when he arrived Sunday at Rome's airport that the churchmen should select their new leader with "serenity and trust."

Samsung outs WiFi only Galaxy Camera

Leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy Camera but don't think that cellular connectivity is of much use for you? Well, Sammy's just taken the covers off a new variant, dubbed the EK-GC110, forsaking the 3G / 4G modem and making the device more affordable in the process. Other key specs remain the same as its sibling, the EK-GC100, including a 16.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 4.8-inch display, 1.4GHz quad-core processor and Android 4.1. The all-important pricing and availability information is still TBA, however. And while this WiFi-only iteration is even less likely to make you set your smartphone aside, hopefully it won't hurt your wallet so much.

Airline Animal Deaths- Don't Fly Your Pets - Project Camelot

I'm posting this story because I know a number of us fly on a regular basis and often take our pets along if we are on an extended stay. This might change your mind or at least bring caution to allowing your pets to travel.

Airline Animal Deaths Raises Concern

Should you rethink bringing your pet on your next vacation?

By Elyce Kirchner and David Paredes

| Saturday, Feb 16, 2013 | Updated 12:07 AM PST

After a five-month analysis of government documents, the NBC Bay Area Investigate Unit uncovered that in a six-year span 302 animals have died, been injured, or have disappeared in the care of commercial airlines.

Delta Airlines saw the most tragedies followed by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, and United Airlines, according to Air Travel Reports published by the Department of Transportation.

How the animals got hurt or killed remains largely unknown.

For the most part, the data does not give a clear answer to why the pets died or were injured.

It?s also hard to get a full perspective.

By law, airlines only have to disclose if a pet is lost or dies during a trip, not the number of animals that have been transported.

The number of incidents has pet owners worried.

?Just treat my dog gently,? said a San Jose woman. She is shipping her dog Caleb, as cargo from the Bay Area to the state of Washington.

?I am just praying that he will get there safely, it will all go smoothly,? she said.

The pet owner asked to remain anonymous. She allowed NBC to place a camera and a temperature recorder inside the kennel to document Calebs' journey.

Michael Jarboe of Miami said pet owners should be worried.

?He was my best friend,? described Jarboe of his 2- year-old Mastiff, Bam Bam.

Jarboe paid United Airlines $650 to have his beloved pet fly from Miami to San Francisco on August 28, 2012. He said he chose the airline because of its ?PetSafe? program.

The program promises benefits such as ?weather and proactive shipment monitoring? and more ?PetSafe climate-controlled van than any other carrier.?

But Jarboe would later learn in a letter from United that animals aren?t always transported in climate-controlled vehicles.

"While our PetSafe program affords us air conditioned vans at our hub locations, there are times because of size of the animal and kennel, and availability, that when connections are less than four hours, we place the animals in a USDA Animal Welfare approved holding area,? the airline wrote.

?His ticket was twice mine, so the assumption is that they (animals) are getting some decent care,? Jarboe said.

According to him, during a layover in Houston, he saw his dog sitting on the tarmac on a luggage cart.

Jarboe claims Bam Bam spent almost four hours in conditions well above 85 degrees. When Jarboe arrived in San Francisco, he was told the dog didn?t make it. Read Bam Bam necropsy here (pdf).

The cause of death was acute cardiovascular collapse, according to a letter sent to Jarboe by United, which paid for the dog?s necropsy.

A United Airlines representative told The Investigate Unit, ?We understand that the loss of a beloved pet is difficult and express our condolences to Mr. Jarboe for his loss. The safety of the animals we transport is always considered first and foremost when making decisions regarding their routing and carriage." Read letter here (pdf).

The United States Department of Agriculture is the regulatory agency that oversees the transport of animals on commercial airlines.

The USDA is investigating to see if United Airlines will receive any civil penalties in Bam Bam?s death. After pouring through hundreds of Live Animal Incident Reports, the Investigative Unit found government oversight varies.

According to a February 2012 report, a Delta Airlines clerk accidentally loaded two pets in a baggage bin with a container of dry ice. Both animals died.

The USDA investigated the incident but no action was taken against the airline.

Jarboe argues, ?If we were in public and we left our dogs in the car in the heat of summer they would arrest us, and the airline can just get away with that.? He said United paid him $3,500 dollars for a new puppy, but said nothing will replace Bam Bam.

His advice to travelers thinking about putting their animal in cargo, ?Don?t fly. Don?t fly.?

Jarboe?s claims came one week after former supermodel Maggie Rizer lost her 2-year- old golden retriever, Bea. Rizer has modeled for dozens of top designers from Gucci to Gap and currently lives in San Francisco. Her agent, Patty Sicular, told the Investigate Unit, Rizer is so devastated; she is unable to discuss her loss publicly. Read report on Maggie's dog here (pdf).

?The airlines are not being forced to take responsibility,? said Mary Beth Melchior. She founded ?whereisjack.org? and launched a Facebook page to help a missing cat named Jack.

The page has nearly 25,000 followers. In August 2011, the feline went missing at Kennedy International Airport in New York after an American Airlines clerk dropped his kennel.

Two months later, Jack fell through the ceiling in the Terminal 8 customs area. The Norwegian forest cat was so ill that he had to be euthanized. Today the Department of Transportation still lists Jack as lost.

?The airlines don't treat your animal any differently than they treat any other luggage,? claims Melchior. However, it?s hard to know just how big of a risk it really is to ship an animal in cargo.

Airlines don?t have to publicly release how many pets are transported. By law, air carriers only have to disclose when a pet is hurt, lost, or dies during a trip.

Airlines for America, the only trade organization of the principal U.S. airlines, denied a request for an on-camera interview. Instead this statement was released: ?The transportation of all passengers, including pets, to their destination safely and comfortably remains the airlines? number-one priority, and airlines adhere to all federal regulations concerning the air transportation of animals. Because not all airlines accept pets for travel, owners should contact the carriers that do for their pet transportation policy."

?I think a lot of owners think that if I can be flown from point A to point B and nothing happens to me, then the same will be for my pet,? said Dr. Chris Cowing who is the President of the California Veterinary Medical Association.

He said that transporting an animal in cargo should be a pet owners? last resort, especially if the animal is older and in poor health.

When asked if airlines should even be allowed to transports animals, Cowing responded, ?I think we demand it and the airlines have to respond in kind. The owners have to be responsible to make sure the pets are healthy.?

And clearly not all trips end in tragedy. Caleb arrived safely from the Bay Area to the state of Washington. Cameras caught him mostly resting alongside his bone in his kennel and temperature graphs showed that he was kept in conditions ranging from 48 to 72 degrees.

Former UH coach Guy V. Lewis named as Hall of Fame finalist

HOUSTON -- He has been this way before, exactly 10 years ago, but never before has there been so much optimism around the Basketball Hall of Fame nomination of former University of Houston coach Guy V. Lewis.

The official announcement came Friday as the 12 finalists for this year's class of the Basketball Hall of Fame were announced in downtown Houston, as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend.

When the announcement was made, Hall of Famer and life-long Cougar, Clyde Drexler, jumped out of his seat on the Hilton Americas stage.

"Did you see me pop up on stage and give him a standing ovation? I think coach Lewis is richly deserving,? said Drexler. ?It's been a long time in coming. With all of the support around the world for Guy Lewis, it's hard for me to think that he wouldn't make it."

His trademark polka dot towel would have gone flying, had he been there.

It's the announcement the Cougar faithful and Lewis? former players had long hoped for.

Former Cougar player Otis Birdsong said, "Do you know U.H. hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since Guy V. was here?"

Guy V. Lewis won 592 games. His teams had nine final four appearances and two NCAA Championship berths. He was the first coach in the South to recruit black players. Elvin Hayes and Don Chaney broke the color barrier for the Cougars.

Guy V. was also the man behind the "Game of the Century" versus UCLA in the Astrodome. That was the first regular season game ever televised nationally.

Lewis' family released a statement saying they are happy with the news.

The 2013 class will be selected at the Final Four in April.
