Cyber forensics to the fore | Bangkok Business Brief

The increasing complexity of electronic transactions is thrusting computer forensics into the spotlight now that enterprises face greater exposure to cybercrime rings.

Computer forensics, sometimes known as computer forensic science, is the branch of digital forensic science pertaining to legal evidence found in computers and digital storage media.

The goal of computer forensics is to examine digital media in a forensically sound manner with the aim of identifying, preserving, recovering, analysing and presenting facts and opinions about the information.

Most often associated with the investigation of a wide variety of computer crime, computer forensics may also be used in civil proceedings.

However, the increasing use of mobile devices and cloud-based computing may pose forensic and chain-of-custody problems.

Orion Investigations, a local private investigation firm, said the number of computer forensic investigations has doubled in the past nine months thanks to surging online business transactions.

?The figure is expected to continue growing by at least 150% over the next 12 months,? said Andrew Smith, Orion?s director of computer forensics.

He said with the advent of technology, more and more companies are relying on computer networks in order to expedite their business procedures and enhance their security.

Not surprisingly, computer forensics has become increasingly important, as the risk of data theft is a major issue that businesses face, said Mr Smith.
