(AP) ? Syrian government forces pounded areas in the central province of Homs on Sunday in a renewed push to regain control of rebel-held territories, and activists said at least 38 people were killed in shelling there over the past 24 hours.

The assault focused on the town of Qusair, near the border with Lebanon, where activists reported at least six people died on Sunday alone. Three others died in shelling of the town of Talbiseh, north of Homs city, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The mortars came down on Qusair by the dozens," said Abu al-Hoda, a Qusair-based activist. He said women and children have been huddled for days in basements of apartment buildings, too fearful to come out. On Saturday, 29 people died in violence across Homs, according to activists.

Also Sunday, Syrian forces unleashed a new round of heavy shelling and sent reinforcements to a mountainous area near the coastal city of Latakia where hundreds of rebels have set up base and which has also been the scene of fierce fighting in recent days.

The fighting between government troops backed by helicopter gunships and armed groups in the area of Haffa began on Tuesday. Rami Abdul-Rahman, the director of the Observatory said at least 58 soldiers have been killed and more than 200 wounded in the operation there since.

He said the heavy losses indicate the seriousness of the challenge in the mountainous area where "hundreds" of rebels are entrenched. His estimated death toll could not be independently verified.

State-run news agency SANA said "terrorist groups" in Haffa attacked public and private institutions on Saturday and committed "heinous" crimes against civilians, setting fire to the national hospital and forcing people to leave their homes. It said troops killed a number of them and arrested several others, adding it was still pursuing gunmen and working to restore security to the area.

Six children were among 10 people killed by a shell that exploded in a house where they had taken cover during the fighting in the region on Saturday, the Observatory said.

Thousands have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March last year and activists put the toll at more than 13,000. International envoy Kofi Annan brokered a cease-fire that went into effect on April 12 but has since been violated every day by both sides of the conflict.

Armed rebels have stepped up their attacks on government troops recently, taking their fight against President Bashar Assad to the capital Damascus, which on Friday saw some of the most intense fighting since the 15-month uprising began.

In northern Syria, thousands took part Sunday in the funeral for nine people who died in reported shelling Saturday night of the town of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib province.

Amateur video posted online by activists Sunday showed a large crowd taking part in the funeral procession. The victims were placed on makeshift stretchers which were carried in the streets as people chanted and mourned their death.

Meanwhile, Syria's main opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council, elected a Kurdish dissident as its new leader at a meeting in Turkey, a council statement said.

Abdulbaset Sieda, a 56-year-old activist who has been living for many years in exile in Sweden, was the only candidate to replace liberal opposition leader Burhan Ghalioun for the three-month presidency. He was elected unanimously during an SNC meeting Saturday night in Istanbul that stretched into early hours Sunday.

The Paris-based Ghalioun presided over the council since it was created last August but recently offered to step down over mounting criticism of his leadership and repeated renewals of his three-month term. Several prominent Syrian dissidents have quit the group calling it an "autocratic" organization no better than Assad's authoritarian rule.

They also complained the group was dominated by Islamists, including the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood.

The Syrian opposition has been hobbled by disorganization and infighting since the popular revolt against Assad began in March 2012. Its international backers have repeatedly appealed for the movement to pull together and work as one unit. The SNC itself has been plagued by infighting, hampering efforts by Western and Arab nations to help the opposition.

Sieda is a secular member of Syria's minority Kurd community. He is seen as a neutral, consensus figure and has said his priority would be to expand the council to include more opposition figures, particularly from Syria's religious minorities.

"Our first mission is to continue with the restructuring of the council. We will also be working on establishing and strengthening relations with the other opposition parties," he said.

His elevation to the post of SNC chief could be part of an attempt to appeal to Syria's significant Kurdish minority, which has largely stayed on the sidelines of the uprising. The community is deeply suspicious that Sunni Arabs who dominate the opposition will be no more likely to provide them greater rights than what they have had under Assad's regime.

"He is an academic. He's also well-known, a moderate man. We shouldn't claim that he has Islamic tendencies or secular tendencies. He has been approved and accepted by everyone," Abdel Hamid Al Attassi, a member of the SNC, said of Sieda.

LinkedIn and Last.fm: How to bounce back from a compromised password

Here's how to check if your account was breached, and what to do about it

No matter what way you look at it, it's been a rough week for online account security. First,?LinkedIn revealed that a whopping 6.5 million account passwords were compromised by Russian hackers. Then, social music portal Last.fm put out a warning?to its entire userbase that their accounts may, too, have been compromised. Overall, an estimated 30 million people have been affected by the unfortunate events.

First things first
If you have a LinkedIn or Last.fm account and haven't yet changed your login details, the very first thing you need to do is update your password(s). The process is extremely simple for both sites: Simply log in using your existing username and password, navigate to the preferences (or settings) menu, and input your new password. Save the changes, and you're set to go.

Pick a password that you can remember, but not something that is a common word or phrase. Many sites will now require you to use numbers, capital letters, or even odd, non-alphanumeric characters in your?password. While it may seem like a nuisance, this practice does help make your account more secure. Here are some tips everyone should use as a starting point for creating a strong password:

  • Do pick a complex combination of words with no relation to one another
  • Do include numbers, capital letters, and other characters when possible
  • Do pick a password you can remember without having to write it down
  • Do change your password frequently, or any time you feel your account may be the victim of a breach
  • Do not use names, specifically those of family members
  • Do not use common phrases or short passwords
  • Do not use the same password for multiple sites
  • Do not tell anyone your password under any circumstances
  • Do not rely solely on password managers to handle your info,?they can be breached as well

A word of warning: If you think you're being creative or ultra-sneaky by using a well-known password, but with a few numbers swapped in for letters, you better think again. Modern password-cracking software used by identity thieves can account for alterations such as this, and you're actually better off making your password longer, with a complex phrase you made up on the spot.

Were you a victim?
After you've changed your password ? and?only after you've changed it ? you can check whether or not your account was actually part of the LinkedIn hacker breach. Online security company LastPass?has set up a tool that can check whether or not your password was one of the 6.5 million seized by the scammers. Simply type your old password into the box and click "Test my password" to find out if you were one of the ones affected.

If your password wasn't involved in the breach, you can breathe a small sigh of relief, but feel extra secure that you changed your password just to be safe. If it turns out that your login details were leaked, it's time to do some double-checking of your LinkedIn account to be sure nothing has been altered or deleted, and immediately check your email inbox and spam folders for any communications from LinkedIn accounts you've never seen before. If you find your account completely unchanged, your account is most likely in the clear.

Cleaning up your online presence
Okay, so your account was compromised, but nothing appears to be amiss on your LinkedIn profile and your inbox is clean as a whistle. You might assume at this point that your work is done, but unfortunately for millions of users, it's not. Despite being advised against it since the dawn of the internet, many web users still use the same password for multiple sites, and if someone knows your LinkedIn password, they may also know your login information for any other site you use with that same lock and key.

Along with asking users to change their passwords, Last.fm noted in its official statement that the breach was linked to password exposure from "other sites." That may be a particularly kind way of hinting that way too many people used the same password for LinkedIn as they used for their streaming music account on Last.fm. If you're one of these people, you need to change the password on every other account that used the same login info, and do it immediately. That includes email, bank accounts, student loan websites, and heck, even your account on Starbucks.com.

Can it happen again?
Unfortunately, yes. The nature of these breaches is unique in that it wasn't carried out by an ID thief looking to score a handful of credit card numbers: It was done at a much higher level, affecting millions of users. There is literally nothing you could have done differently to prevent an event like this. That responsibility rests with the companies themselves.

What you?can do, is be watchful and vigilant of any irregularities in your own accounts that may be a sign that nefarious actions are taking place. Just like everything else in life, having online accounts poses risks, and there's no way to truly escape them, but by taking precautions, you can put yourself in a position where no matter what happens, you'll be able to bounce back in no time.

Zebrafish aren't picky when it comes to making friends. A new study reveals that the 3-centimeter-long swimmers?the "lab rats" of aquatic science?will hang around a robotic fish, even a crudely designed one.

The robot has features previously shown to attract both male and female zebrafish: the plump round shape of an egg-laden female zebrafish, bright blue stripes in the pattern sported by the species, and a flexible tail that can be moved back and forth. Even though the makeshift model is a whopping five times the size of an adult zebrafish (several shown in background at right), both single zebrafish and groups preferred mingling with the robot to spending time elsewhere in the tank, the researchers report online today in Bioinspiration & Biomimetics.

In the dark, however, the zebrafish avoided the robot?a sign, the researchers say, that the fish don't like the noise it makes, but that they're willing to ignore this when they can see the robot's visual cues. The team is now studying how zebrafish and other species respond to free-swimming robots in tanks that include fish of several species, which represents a more realistic environment, and future tests will include vegetation and other hiding spots.

Besides helping study fish behavior in the lab, the researchers contend that such robots may offer a way to protect endangered species by luring them away from hazards or by repelling their predators.

Hillary Clinton Called Overweight, Tired By Author


U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton continues to make news, and not just for the nearly impeccable job she's doing as America's top diplomat.

When she visited Bangladesh in early May, their human rights record wasn't the top news, nor was her speech on tensions within the country.

Instead, it was Hillary Clinton without makeup, as she went out in public sporting black framed glasses and red lipstick with her hair down.

Misguided as it was, most of that coverage was positive. Now, though, amidst rumors that she'll run for President in 2016, the knives are coming out.

The latest attack on Clinton came from Ed Klein, an author who has penned a number of controversial books, including The Truth About Hillary.

"At this very moment that we're speaking right now, Brian, [the Clintons] are already thinking seriously about running in 2016," Klein told Fox News.

"She'll be 69 years old. And I don't want to sound anti-feminist here, but she's not looking good ... She's looking overweight, and she's looking very tired."

Klein, whose new book on the current President, The Amateur, contains an Obama divorce story and his old girlfriend's, continued to comment on Clinton."I think she's going to take time off, get back into shape. And if her health holds out - that's a big if, of course - if her health holds out, there's no question in my mind she and Bill - two for the price of one - will run in 2016."

Despite widespread respect for Clinton, society as a whole is seemingly comfortable judging female politicians on issues beyond their policies.

Clinton, 64, will be the unquestioned Democratic frontrunner in 2016 regardless of whether President Obama wins a second term in 2012.

That alone tells you the respect she commands despite criticisms of her weight and appearance, but is it still unfair to judge her in such ways?

NEW YORK (AP) ? A 200-point charge turned the Dow Jones industrial average positive for the year following a dismal stretch in May.

The Dow is up 208 points at 12,337 shortly before noon.

All 30 Dow stocks were higher, led by Bank of America, up 7 percent. The last time the Dow closed up more than 200 points was March 13.

The big jump follows weeks of losses, including a 275-point plunge last Friday caused by a surprisingly weak report on the U.S. job market

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 22 points to 1,308. The Nasdaq composite rose 56 points to 2,834.

The gains were broad. Just 14 of the S&P 500 companies were lower, and more than eight stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange.
