Boo! All Aware Now? - The Falcon's View

It's Halloween, which not only means costumes, parties, candy, and trick-or-treaters, but also the close of the annual Cybersecurity Awareness Month (among other things to be aware of). So... are you more aware today than you were on October 1st? :)

I find this notion of an awareness month for security to be somewhat odd... it's not like we have non-profit research groups trying to save lives... rather, we're trying to raise awareness for something that, quite frankly, is suffering from a generational and human evolutionary problem. Plain and simple, we're still in a transitional (pre-equilibrium) period... mid-flight in this "digital industrial revolution"... and until we reach some reasonable stasis point, humans simply won't all be able to keep up, let alone evolve.

At the same time, human risk factors represent one our biggest, most under-addressed exposures today, as highlighted by social engineering and spearphishing attacks, confusion around cloud computing and cloud security, and the exacerbating effects of BYOD/BYON/BYOA. Fundamentally, people are not making good quality risk decisions. Technologies (which are lagging well behind in the defensive categories, as I noted here) are not going to "solve" this problem anytime soon, if ever. This means that "awareness" needs to be amped up.

And here, then, is where I take issue with holding an awareness month. What we really need is an awareness year or decade. Moreover, we need aggressive awareness campaigns that invest heavily in educating business leaders, the legal industry, and... well... everyone about various "cyber" risks.

For business leaders, we need to clearly outline the place of operational risk management in their overall risk portfolio/dashboard (along with financial, hazard, strategic, and compliance risk). We need to educate them on IT's disproportionate influence on oprisk these days, and help them understand how to set a reasonable climate for making sound decisions, backed-up by a culture of accountability.

For legal advisors, we need to undertake aggressive efforts to ensure that they not only understand technologies at a high level, but that they understand the importance and necessity of various security-oriented terms on contracts and agreements. If your organization does not currently have a legal advisor who is demonstrably savvy/competent in infosec/cyber law, then it's time to supplement or hire for those skills. It may even be worthwhile to bring in a law student or send a staff lawyer back to school just to get these skills in-house, in a manner that brings with it the ability to nominally understand the IT component of op risk and how that translates to various legal agreements and situations.

Lastly, standard awareness training cannot be relied upon. Instead, it's time to up the ante. All personnel must be informed of their duty to make good risk decisions, given the tools to make good risk decisions, and held accountable for those decisions. Aggressive awareness training must be conducted to continually remind people of what good and bad decisions are, what common threats and vulnerabilities look like, and how their decisions directly impact the core functions of the business. This program must include ensuring that managers are not making arbitrary decisions to outsource without involving the right parties from legal, risk and compliance, and IT. Consequences must be clearly stated... and then enforced! Corporate cultures too often fall out of a culture of accountability ("freedom & responsibility" as Netflix terms it)... we need a reversal on this course if there's any hope of making progress.

So... perhaps you're not really much more aware today than you were on October 1st, but maybe this little post will give you a few ideas for how to solve that going forward. Maybe by this time next year you can start seeing the benefits of affected change. In the meantime, let's hope your monitoring, detection, and response capabilities are tuned-up and working well!

Happy Halloween!

Northern Community Radio works with BSU's Mass Communications

In the next couple of week we'll be hearing from Mass Communication students from Valica Boudry's News Reporting Class.? This morning we had updates and information on the proposed constitutionals amendments that you'll see on your ballots as well as Bemidji city recall amendment.? Here's Marina Lang's report on the proposed marriage amendment to the MN Constitution.

Minnesotans who visit the polls this November will find themselves with a question regarding limiting marriage to opposite sex couples. It will be something along the lines of:

Recognition of marriage as solely between one man and one woman.

The options are yes or no.

If this amendment passes, it would be added to the Minnesota Constitution and would, for the time being, make it so that only the union of one man and one woman will be recognized as a marriage in Minnesota. This would be semi permanent prevention of same-sex couples from being legally married in the state of Minnesota, until a time when a federal decision was made, one way or another.

This amendment would give a definition to marriage in the State Constitution if it passes. People supporting this amendment hope for reinforcement of recognition of marriage as between opposite-sex couples. Some supporters believe that if marriage were not defined as between one man and one woman, historic meaning and value of marriage may be lost, and marriage may become a ?meaningless political gesture, rather than a child-affirming social construct.? (http://www.minnesotaformarriage.com/threat/)

If this amendment fails, same-sex marriage does not become legal. Many people opposed to this amendment hope that marriage will not become defined as between one man and one woman so that there is opportunity to later vote for marriage to become legal between same-sex couples. In the long run, same-sex couples hope for rights that legally are only available to opposite-sex couples at this time, through marriage.(http://mnunited.org/)

There is always a long process before a proposed amendment is seen on a ballot- the Minnesota Legislature introduced bills proposing this same-sex marriage amendment and had it approved by both the Minnesota State Senate and State House.

If the amendment passes, Minnesota will have a definition of marriage in the State Constitution, which would make same-sex marriage impossible for now. If not passed, some believe the sanctity of the marriage institution is at stake. A lot of time went into getting this amendment on the ballot and whatever the results, many Minnesotans will be personally affected.

Flooded subways deep underground may pose biggest threat to recovery

NEW YORK (AP) ? The floodwaters that poured into New York's deepest subway tunnels may pose the biggest obstacle to the city's recovery from the worst natural disaster in the transit system's 108-year history.

Critical electrical equipment could be ruined. Track beds could be covered with debris. Corrosive salt water could have destroyed essential switches, lights, turnstiles and the power-conducting third rail.

Several of the tunnels that carry cars and subway trains beneath New York City's East River remained flooded Tuesday. The head of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it was too early to tell how long it would take to pump them dry and make repairs.

There has always been flooding in the tunnels, which collect storm water constantly, even in the lightest of rains. But authorities said there has never been anything like the damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy. The South Ferry subway station, at Manhattan's southern tip, had water up to its ceiling.

The high water meant inspectors weren't immediately able to assess how badly the water had damaged key equipment, raising the possibility that the nation's largest city could be forced to endure an extended shutdown of the system that shuttles more than 5 million riders to work and home every day.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg guessed it could take four days for train service to resume. And even then it was unclear how much of the nation's largest public transit system would be operational.

"If there are parts of the subway system we can get up, we will get them up," MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said. But he suggested that, for a time, the system would be a patchwork, with buses filling in many of the gaps. Buses resumed operations Tuesday evening. Fares were being waived through Wednesday.

Experts suggested that the cost of repairs could be staggering.

A report released last year by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority estimated that a flood roughly comparable to the one that hit the city Monday night would do $10 billion in damage to the transportation infrastructure and cause another $40 billion in economic losses due to the paralyzing effects of a crippled transit system.

Klaus Jacob, an environmental disaster expert at Columbia University who oversaw the portion of the report dealing with transit disruptions, said the study estimated that it would take four weeks to get the subway system back to 90 percent of normal capacity.

"I'm not saying that this is definitely what is going to happen here," he cautioned.

But he said the transit authority's challenges are severe.

"In the tunnels under the East River, all the signal-and-control systems are underwater. And it is salt water," he said. "It's not just that it doesn't work right now. It all has to be cleaned, dried, reassembled and tested. And we are not sure what the long-term corrosion effect might be."

At the time of the study, he said, the MTA also had only a fraction of the large pumps it would need to get major floodwaters out of train and vehicle tunnels quickly.

The study looked at the kind of flood that the Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates would only strike the city every 100 years.

This week's storm, he said, illustrates the pressing need for better defenses against the higher water levels that will come with a warmer planet.

"I think we have come to the end of studies. What we need now is action," he said.

Some authorities were contemplating the same ideas.

"We have to start thinking about how we redesign the system so this doesn't happen again," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "I don't think anyone can sit back anymore and say, 'I'm shocked at this weather pattern.' There is no weather pattern that can shock me anymore."

Seven subway tunnels and two vehicular tunnels took on massive amounts of water during the night as the rivers that surround Manhattan rose to record levels. Nearly 4,000 feet of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel remained heavily flooded Tuesday morning. Water also poured into the Queens-Midtown Tunnel across the East River. Floodwaters also inundated parts of the PATH system that brings commuters from New Jersey to the World Trade Center site and midtown Manhattan.

The river tunnels that allow Amtrak trains to connect with New York City also filled with an "unprecedented" amount of water, railroad officials said in a statement.

Amtrak planned to offer modified service between Newark, N.J., and points to the south on Wednesday, but officials could offer no timetable for restoring trains into Manhattan. No trains were running between Boston and New York.

The Holland Tunnel, one of only three ways to get across the Hudson River to New Jersey from Manhattan by car, remained closed as well, with no date for reopening.

The subway system has built-in pumps that typically remove 13 million gallons of water from the tubes across the city. Special pump trains were being deployed to handle the extra load.

The MTA cut power to tracks before the flood, hoping to minimize damage, but until the tunnels and stations are dry, inspectors won't know if the precautions worked.

"We'll find out. But right now, we just don't know," said Charles Seaton, an MTA spokesman.

Water in the two vehicle tunnels receded slightly as the tide fell Tuesday morning, but the massive pumps that will eventually empty the tubes were unable to immediately make headway because the places where they normally send water ? the river and sewer system ? remained so high, the outflow pipes in the pumping system were still submerged.

"Our pumps are working. It's just that the water has no place to go," MTA spokeswoman Judy Glave said. "We pump it out and it just comes back in."

Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, offered no estimate on how long it might be before the PATH commuter rail lines reopen.

"We're still trying to assess what happened," he said.

Most of the city's bridges did well during the storm and reopened Tuesday when the wind died down. One of the two bridges leading out to the ravaged Rockaway barrier islands remained closed because of flood damage in the surrounding neighborhoods. A train causeway to the Rockaways also remained closed because of flooding.

There were other problems in the transportation system. Some rail yards and bus garages took on water. Sludge and debris covered some tracks. Trees blocked bus routes. Workers will need to walk hundreds of miles of track on foot to search for damage. At least 40 Long Island Rail Road power stations lost electricity, and the overhead power lines that allow Metro-North trains to operate were damaged in several areas.

One diesel-powered patrol train inspecting the Metro-North's Hudson line, which runs north along the Hudson River, found a 40-foot boat blocking the tracks in Ossining, N.Y., officials said.

How To Help A Loved One Experiencing Domestic Violence | Fem2pt0

This post is originally published on Everyday Feminism.? It is cross-posted with permission.

(Trigger Warning)

Domestic violence, dating violence, relationship violence ? no matter how we label it?s not something we like to talk about. Or perhaps more accurately, it?s not something we know how to talk about ? especially when it?s happening to someone we love.

But it?s really important we learn how to talk about it ? in ways that actually help people going through it (which is far more difficult than you may think).

Why is it important to talk about? Because:

In short, you probably know more people experiencing domestic violence than you think.

What Doesn?t Work

So if you see red flags, what can you do to help someone?

Your first instinct may be to tell the victim that what they?re experiencing is domestic violence and they need to get out.

And when they look at you in surprise or act defensive and say ?I don?t know what you?re talking about?, you?ll probably be confused or feel upset and insist that they leave.

And when they say they?re not being abused (even though you?ve seen the bruises, heard the insults, and watched their self-esteem crumble) or that they can?t leave, you may throw up your hands in frustration and walk away thinking, ?well if they want to stay??

STOP ? Before you go down this very well-intentioned but disempowering path, remember their abuser has probably been working very hard to isolate the victim and destroy their self-esteem and sense of self-worth through emotional, verbal, physical, sexual, financial, and identity abuse.

This can create strong entrenched feelings of shame and embarrassment and often ?victims of domestic violence try to hide what?s going on from their family, friends, colleagues, and any other supportive person or network ? unless the abuser has already driven them away.

And while we know you have good intentions, telling them what they?re experiencing and what they should do about it can further isolate the victim who may or may not be ready to confront their abuse.

It is so important to let the victim determine the next steps, to make their own decisions and take back the power and control over their own lives.

When we make decisions for others, when we try to help them do what they are not ready to do for themselves, we are taking their power and control away from them.

For victims to find the strength and courage to safely navigate away from an abuser, they?re going to need confidence in their power and control over their own story and situation.

And that?s something you can help them with ? reflect back to them the power and control they do have and the good decisions they make everyday. ?This can help them find strength faster.

So how do you have these conversations?? They?re not always easy but here?s a list of ways you can support someone you care about to become empowered and take action to escape the abuse.

Get Support from Your Local Domestic Violence Program

Realizing that someone you care about is being abused is tough and knowing how to approach them may seem even more daunting.

Remember, you?re not alone.? You can reach out to people?s whose job it is to help people in these situations and lean on their advice.

When you call your local domestic violence program, talk to them about:

  • What you can say in the first conversation, especially to better understand what YOU feel comfortable saying. You can even practice with them or role play to make sure you?re not projecting any judgement.
  • What the victim can expect if they call a domestic violence hotline. This can help remove any mystery or fear around reaching out for help.
  • What rights, options and local resources a victim can access in your area.
  • A few basic safety planning tips to help the victim get to a safe place when they can connect with an anti-domestic violence advocate. Safety planning is a tool to help victims think through ways and resources they have ?to try to mitigate a violent situation. Each safety plan is tailored to the victim?s specific situation and needs.
  • How you?re coping with knowing someone you care about is being abused. The impact of abuse isn?t isolated to the victim and can also affect those who care about them. Vicarious trauma is real. So it?s important as you?re supporting them through this situation, that you are also getting support. For survivors of abuse, this is particularly important because it can trigger past trauma, bringing back difficult memories and emotions and leading us to project ourselves into their situation.

Talk To Them For the First Time About the Abuse

The most important thing in such conversations is to communicate your concern without judgment. Let the victim tell their own story and decide their own process.

Remember, no one understands their abuser and their situation better than them. While you may have seen some signs of abuse, there?s probably many things you don?t understand about the relationship that impact how they think and feel.

Instead, focus on creating a space where they can realize their own power and control over their lives and decide what steps they want to take. Remember, this is about them, not you and what you want for them.

Some things to keep in mind during the conversation are:

  • Use words that convey concern about their safety without judgment for their relationship or abuser. Asking why they?re staying with such a terrible person will likely cause them to shut down. Instead, use language like, ?When I saw X happen, I became concerned about your safety. Have you thought about talking to someone about what you are going through?? or ?I?ve heard similar things from other people and I know there are free and confidential hotlines available at any time of the day or night.? This type of language helps them realize they are not responsible for the abusive behavior nor do they have to defend it.
  • Reflect their own power and control back to them while showing your support. One example is, ?Here are resources when you?re ready. I encourage you to make that call. But I want you to know that this is your situation and you know what is best for you. Is there anything I can do to help??
  • Meet them where they?re at and don?t try to change their mind. What they choose to do should be respected, even if it?s to remain with the abuser. While some want to get out of the situation, some may just want the abuse to end. Abusers are not all one-sided evil people, they are complex human beings and some may have been victims in the past as well. Talking to someone safe about what they?re experiencing, seeking out options for the abusers to address their use of violence, or reporting them to the police are all valid options if that?s what the victim wants. What?s important is that they decide who they reach out to and when.
  • Remind them that no one deserves to be abused and that nothing they have done justifies violence against them. Due to the abuse, they may have internalized the batterer?s words that it?s all their fault, that they?re not good enough, that they deserve to be treated this way, and/or that no one else will love them. So reflect back to them that they are good, important, and lovable and deserve better.
  • Be a non-judgemental sounding board as they try to figure out what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, particularly around emotional and verbal abuse. In our society, unhealthy behaviors like name calling and lashing out in anger are normalized. But in healthy relationships, people acknowledge when they make a mistake or did something wrong and apologize ? abusers don?t. So help them think through how their partner handles conflict. If the batterer does not acknowledge when they do something wrong and blames their partner for their behavior, it can help the victim see the pattern of controlling behavior.
  • Share with them services they can access and how these services can help. Offer your support by accompanying them to a domestic violence organization or be with them when they call a hotline. Remember, don?t push them into doing anything, not only is it controlling and disempowering, they are less likely to follow through.

Support Them through the Long-Haul

Remember, on average it takes 7-13 attempts at leaving before a victim is able to break free from an abusive relationship. And leaving can be the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship and in fact is when most victims are murdered. Leaving takes thoughtful planning, requires established support and needs to be done safely, especially when there are children involved. ?So your first conversation may not lead to change.

But at least you?ve planted the seed that they deserve better and there are people who can and will help.

Depending on the extent of the damage the abuser has done to their self-esteem and sense of self-worth, it can take a long time for a victim to have the strength to take any action other than what they are already doing to cope with the abuse.

So it?s important that you mange your expectations about the impact of your support. You can?t save anyone but you can be there for them, unconditionally.

Otherwise, you can easily end up feeling frustrated and resentful. It can lead to moments where you want to cry out, ?why don?t you just leave??, ?just listen to me and go talk to this organization!?, or even ?I spent all this time researching services for you and you didn?t even call me back!?

It?s not uncommon for people to want to rescue others. While it?s well-intentioned, when we try to solve other?s problems for them, we disempower them.

At the same time, supporting someone in an abusive situation can be difficult and scary. As we mentioned already, get support for yourself from the local domestic violence agency. If you?re a survivor, it?s especially important to take care of yourself so you are not triggered and reliving your own trauma history.

If You Remember Nothing Else

If all this seems overwhelming, remember these words, ?No matter what you decide to do, I will support you and I will be here for you whenever you need me.?

Or if you can?t or don?t want to say that, how about, ?There are free and confidential services that can help you any time of the day or night. You are not alone.?

With these words, you?ve respected their autonomy and reflected back that you trust them to make the best decision for themselves.

And if you say this often enough, it may rise above the abuser?s voice long enough for them to take action to end the abuse.

Syrian air raid on strategic town kills 6 civilians: activists

AMMAN (Reuters) - A Syrian airforce raid on a rebel-held town, strategically situated on the Damascus-Aleppo highway, killed at least six civilians on Tuesday, including children, opposition campaigners in the area said.

Video footage showed men pulling out the body of a toddler from a flattened building in a northern neighborhood of Maarat al-Numaan, 300 kilometers (188 miles) north of Damascus, which has been under aerial and ground bombardment since rebels seized control last month.

The footage could not be independently verified.

Survivors criticize Myanmar gov't over clashes

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? Victims of ethnic clashes in western Myanmar lashed out at the government for failing to prevent violence between Muslims and Buddhists that has displaced more than 32,000 people over the last week.

The crisis, which erupted in June, has raised international concern and posed one of the biggest challenges yet to Myanmar's reformist President Thein Sein, who inherited power from a xenophobic military junta last year.

The latest violence between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims began Oct. 21 and has left at least 84 people dead and 129 injured, according to the government. Human rights groups believe the true toll could be far higher.

"The authorities are not solving the problem and soldiers are not defending us," said Kyaw Myint, a Muslim who took refuge at Thechaung camp outside the Rakhine state capital, Sittwe. He fled his home in nearby Pauktaw when it was torched Wednesday.

"I feel as though I am in hell," he said. "We have no one to take care of us, no place to go, and now no job to earn a living."

A 37-year-old Rakhine trader named Maung Than Naing, reached by phone in the village of Kyauktaw, also expressed anger over the government's handling of the violence.

"We are helpless because the government is not dealing with the root of the problem," he said. "We no longer want to live with the Muslims."

Maung Than Naing, who also lost his home in an arson attack, blamed the Rohingya for breaking the calm.

"These poor Muslim people who live hand to mouth burned their own homes so that they enjoy the U.N. aid where they are given shelter and free food," he said.

A tense calm has held across the region since Saturday, Rakhine state spokesman Myo Thant said. More police and soldiers have been deployed to increase security, but he declined to give details.

The priority now is to ensure those who lost homes have adequate shelter and food, Myo Thant said.

Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are widely denigrated as intruders who came from neighboring Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

The Rohingya also face official discrimination, a policy encouraged by Myanmar's previous military regimes to enlist popular support among other groups. A 1982 law formally excluded them as one of the country's 135 ethnicities, meaning most are denied basic civil rights and are deprived of citizenship.

Human rights groups say racism also plays a role: Many Rohingya, who speak a Bengali dialect and resemble Muslim Bangladeshis, have darker skin and are heavily discriminated against.

Bangladesh, though, also denies them citizenship. The U.N. estimates their population in Myanmar at 800,000.

Tensions have simmered in western Myanmar since clashes first broke out in June after a Rakhine woman was allegedly raped and murdered by three Muslim men. The June violence displaced 75,000 people ? also mostly Muslims.

U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar Ashok Nigam said Tuesday that the number of people confirmed displaced in the latest unrest rose to more than 32,000 after about 5,600 people who fled their villages on boats arrived at an island south of Sittwe.

The vast majority of the displaced are Muslim, Nigam said, adding that the U.N. figure was based on statistics from local authorities.

The new numbers bring the total number of displaced in Rakhine state since June to at least 107,000.

Finding triggers of birth defects in an embryo heart

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have found a way to create three-dimensional maps of the stress that circulating blood places on the developing heart in an animal model -- a key to understanding triggers of heart defects.

The team has begun testing the technology to uncover how alcohol, drugs and other factors set off events that result in defects found in newborn humans.

Passing blood cells drag on the endothelial cells that line the growing heart, a phenomenon called shear stress, which has been linked to changes in gene expression that results in defects, most often in the valves. But precisely how they're connected is unclear.

"Alcohol exposure may affect shear stress by modulating the heart rate, but it may also involve vigor and/or timing of the contraction," said Andrew Rollins, associate professor of biomedical engineering and senior author of the new study. "Now that we have the tool, we can start to figure that out."

"We're analyzing early and late development of the heart and trying to make the connections that result in valve dysfunction," said Lindsy M. Peterson, a PhD student in Rollins' lab and lead author. Their work is published in the current online issue of the Optical Society of America's journal Biomedical Optics Express.

The pair teamed with research assistant professor Michael W. Jenkins; senior research associate Shi Gu; Lee Barwick, an undergraduate researcher now at Brigham Young University; and Michiko Watanabe, a professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

To look at the structure of the developing heart and blood flow, the researchers modified a technology called Doppler optical coherence tomography. Called OCT for short, they shine an infrared laser on the heart.

The reflections measured at various depths are used to create a three-dimensional image in much the same manner submariners use sonar to picture their surroundings in the deep sea. But the researchers add the dimension of time, creating movies of blood flow through the structures, needed to map shear stress.

They take their first images at two days, during a stage of heart development called cardiac looping. This is when the simple straight tube that's an embryo heart turns clockwise into a helix, forming the beginnings of two atria and two ventricles. They take more images at three days and again at eight days, when the septum, the wall between the left and right sides of the heart, has formed.

Working with Ganga Karunamuni, a pediatrics research associate at the school of medicine, the team is now pursuing a slate of experiments testing the quail heart model's response to alcohol exposure and will also test exposure to mental health drugs called selective serotonin receptor inhibitors. Alone or together, they can alter shear stress.

They are exposing the model to alcohol at a stage called gastrulation, when the embryo changes from two sheets of cells to a multi-layered organism.

This is a critical stage for induction of birth defects, Peterson said. In humans, it's an early stage when a woman may not know that she is pregnant.

Rollins said clinical applications are a long way off but the team has begun talking about possibilities.

"If it became feasible to screen a fetus for abnormal heart function," he said, "it might be possible to intervene with drugs, with gene therapy." Or, by using non-invasive pulses of infrared light to make the heart contract on demand -- another technology the team is developing with clinical colleagues in Pediatric Cardiology- to prevent or treat defects before birth.

WCU receives $100K grant for clinic ? WCU News

Western Carolina University is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission for a new balance and fall prevention clinic under development in the university?s recently opened Health and Human Sciences Building. The funding will enable the purchase of specialized equipment for the new clinic, where students and practicing medical professionals will receive training in how to properly assess and treat fall and balance problems among older adults.

?Injuries resulting from falls are a significant health problem for older adults, which is a fast-growing segment of the population in Western North Carolina,? said Marie Huff, interim dean of WCU?s College of Health and Human Sciences. ?This grant will help us train our students in the diagnosis of balance problems and other situations that can lead to falls, how to help older adults reduce the risk of falling, and how to treat them when falls do occur.?

The clinic will provide service to residents of Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties and on the Qualla Boundary.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries for Americans 65 and older. More than 18,000 older Americans die every year because of a fall, and the rate has risen dramatically over the last 10 years, said Huff, who co-wrote the grant proposal with Linda Seestedt-Stanford, former dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.

?Through the services provided by this clinic, we will help keep senior citizens living independently and in their homes, which will have a positive impact on the local economy,? Huff said. ?The clinic will provide support to caregivers and will enhance the education of students, faculty and practitioners within the health and human sciences fields. The university will graduate health care professionals who are better prepared to focus on the needs of older adults.?

The equipment made possible by the ARC funding will be used by students and faculty in several academic disciplines, including physical therapy, speech and hearing, and nursing, that are located in the Health and Human Sciences Building, which opened in August.

The balance and fall prevention clinic at WCU is among the current and upcoming features of the $46 million Health and Human Sciences Building, the first facility to be constructed on the university?s West Campus. The four-story, 160,000 square-foot flagship building brings under one roof more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff in health-related academic programs previously located in several different structures.

The building?s first floor features an interdisciplinary clinic, which hosts WCU?s nationally recognized Speech and Hearing Clinic, and includes space for specialized clinics related to physical therapy, nursing, social work, nutrition, athletic training and recreational therapy.

In addition to the balance and fall prevention clinic, specific offerings being developed to address community needs include a regional assessment center for older adults. In these clinics, specialized diagnostic and rehabilitation services will be provided to members of the community, with a primary emphasis on student education and training. Video capabilities enable patients, students and faculty to observe and review experiences in the clinics.

Equipment purchased through the ARC grant is expected to be acquired over the next few months, and the balance and fall prevention clinic is anticipated to begin offering services as early as February for individuals with balance, dizziness and mobility disorders.

For more information about WCU?s College of Health and Human Sciences, call 828-227-7271, or visit the website chhs.wcu.edu.

WCU is recipient of a $100,000 grant that will enable purchase of specialized equipment such as this for use in developing a new balance and fall prevention clinic.

20 Super-Effective Stability Ball Exercises

Illustrations by Shannon Orcutt

What?s the deal with those big bouncy balls taking up space around the gym? Stability balls (aka exercise balls, balance balls, Swiss balls or fitness balls) are more than just fun to sit and bounce on; they?re a great way to improve strength, cardio endurance, and balance. By tackling basic moves (like push-ups, squats, and planks) on an unstable surface, muscles get more bang for the buck (and who doesn?t want to be ready for the gun show in far less time?)[]. Stability balls are also great for getting back into shape after an injury because they can reduce muscle and spinal strain during certain movements[].

To get the most from a bouncy fitness routine, make sure to choose the correct size stability ball?(note: some moves below use a larger or smaller than normal ball. For most exercises, though, it?s best to have correctly sized equipment). Most balls come in three diameters based on the user?s height: 55 cm for those between 4?11? and 5?4?, 65 cm for people between 5?4? and 5?7?, and 75 cm for tall drinks of water between 5?11? and 6?7?. A good rule of thumb for finding the right fit: Sit on the ball and make sure the hips and knees are at right angles with the floor. Reps and sets will depend on fitness levels, but for most of these exercises we recommend doing 3-5 sets of 10-20 reps. After a few workouts, try bumping up the reps to really test that strength. Ready to go? These moves take the stability ball way beyond the basic crunch.

Lower Body

Stability Ball Squat and Reach1.?Squat and Reach: Ready to bust a move? Get the blood flowing with a slow n? steady squat that works arms and abs as well as legs. Hold the ball with straight arms, so it?s about level with the face. Squat down, bringing the ball all the way to the left side, just above the left foot. Hang tight in this position for three slow breaths, and then untwist the torso and return to standing before repeating on the other side. For the best results, keep that butt down in the squats and hold arms straight out in front of the torso. Try 10-15 reps of this twisty move to get the arms, core, and legs in tip-top shape. ?

2.?Wall Squat: Put those quads to work with this power move. Stand about three feet from a wall with feet shoulder-width apart and the back to the wall. Place the ball between the lower back and the wall and squat down slowly until the legs form 90-degree angles at the knees. Use the ball to support the back as it rolls from the lower back to the shoulder blades. Slowly stand up again, and repeat for 10-15 reps.

3.?Standing Ball Squeeze: If you embarrass easily, try this move at home to work the hips, lower back, and inner thighs. Stand upright and place the ball between the legs, so the center is about even with the knees (it should not be touching the floor). Squat down until knees form 90-degree angles, squeezing the ball to stay balanced. Hold the position as long as possible, working up to 30-45 seconds per set. Note: For this move, consider using a ball that?s not the perfect fit. A larger ball makes this move more difficult, while a smaller ball is a little easier on the thighs. Beginners can also use a chair or wall for help with balance.

4.?Overhead Ball Squat: Ready to use the arms and the legs? For this one, complete a traditional squat, while holding the stability ball with the arms extended overhead. Adding weight (nope, not quite light as air) plus keeping the torso in an upright position engages the shoulders and deltoid muscles. Go for 10-15 reps of this bad boy.

5.?Hamstring Curl: Lie on the floor with arms extended perpendicular to the torso and lower calves and heels resting on the ball. Engaging the glutes and abs, lift the hips up from the floor. Use the outstretched arms for stability, as this is definitely a wobbly position! Exhale and slowly bring the knees in towards the hips, so the feet are resting flat on top of the ball. Pause for a few seconds in this position and then inhale, straightening legs out again. Keep those hips up the whole time to get maximum gluteus maximus benefits. Aim for 10-12 reps of this total-body move.

6.?Ball Lunge: Ready for the balance big leagues? While standing, place the ball behind the body and put one foot top-down on the top of the ball. Step the other foot out about six inches, and bend both knees in a deep lunge. Make sure the knee of the front foot does not go over the toes. (For the stability-challenged, a chair or railing can provide extra support.) This advanced move will test stability as well as strength, so shoot for 8-10 reps (or as many as you can do with proper form) on each side.

7.?Reverse Extension: Last but certainly not least, time to work that booty! Start with your chest on the ball, with fingertips and toes resting on the floor. Roll forward so hands are under shoulders and hips are directly touching the ball. With the feet together and the core engaged, lift the legs straight from the floor until they are in line with the torso. Hold for a beat and then repeat. Try for 12-15 reps before heading back to solid ground.

Upper Body

Stability Ball Plank8.?Standing Plank: Pump up the intensity of a standard plank with this move. Using a wobbly stability ball gives the shoulders and arms an extra-tough workout. With one leg extended behind, rest the elbows and forearms on the ball (for a really tough challenge, try this with straight arms). Step the other leg back so the feet are together. Hold the position as long as possible, working up to 30 seconds per set.

9.?Roll Out: This multitasking move works the arms and and core (score!). Kneel behind the ball, with palms down on top. Slowly use the hands to push the ball forward until the triceps are resting on top of the ball and the legs are almost all the way extended with the knees on the ground. Remember: A tight core will keep the body moving straight ahead. Feeling pressure on the knees? Place a towel or yoga mat under them for a little extra TLC. Concentrate on maintaining the proper form for 10 reps straight.

10.?Balance Push-Up: These ain?t your mama?s push-ups! Take this basic bodyweight move to the next level with a stability ball. Lie facedown on the ball with hands and feet touching the ground and the stomach on the top of the ball. Walk the hands out until the shins are resting on the ball and the torso is in a flat push-up position. Lower the torso towards the ground until the upper arms are parallel to the ground. Return to the ?up? push-up position and continue for 8-10 reps (or more, if you can hang).

11.?Tricep Dips: Get stronger tris with this adapted dip exercise. Sit on the ball with legs forming 90-degree angles and feet hip-width apart. Next, place the hands on either side of the hips on the ball and slowly scoot the hips forward so they?re a few inches in front of the ball. At this point, the heels are on the ground and the hands are on the ball supporting the rest of the body. Use the triceps to lower the arms down a few inches, and then return to the starting position. Keep the back straight and abs engaged for 10-15 reps.

12.?Back Extension: You can do it, put your back into it! Start with the stomach and hips on the ball, legs extended straight behind (toes resting on the ground). Hold onto the ball with the hands for balance. If this position is difficult to maintain due to slippery shoes, try placing the feet against a wall. Raise the chest high (like a yoga ?cobra?), bringing the hands to the back of the head. Hold for a beat or two, and return to a relaxed position. Repeat for 12-15 reps.

13.?Pike: Been there, done that? This super-advanced move will have even fitness buffs sweating. Start in the push-up position described above (see no. 10), but with the toes instead of shins resting on top of the ball. With straight legs, use the abdominals to pull the toes towards the chest. Done properly, the torso will be in a push-up position with the back straight (no arching or sagging) and legs angling down towards the ball. This move ain?t for the faint of heart, so give it a shot for 5-8 reps.

Core

Stability Ball V-Sit14.?V-Sit with Ball: V for victory (in the killer abs department). Lie face up on the ground with ankles resting on the top of the stability ball. With arms pointing towards the feet, roll the torso up so the body forms a V with the hips on the ground. Hold for five counts (long enough for a serious case of the ab-shakes) and slowly roll back down to the ground. Repeat for 6-10 reps.

15.?Ball Jog: Get your heart pumping and release that inner child all at once! For this blood-pumping move, sit tall on the ball with abs engaged and feet firmly on the floor. Lift the knees up and down to bounce as high as possible on the ball. Try bouncing for 2-5 minutes to keep the heart rate up mid-workout (or try it as a fun warm-up!) nice and warmed up.

16.?Knee Tucks: Arms and shoulders not quite ready for the pike? This adaptation is easier on the upper body but still brings a serious abdominal workout. Start in push-up position with toes resting on the ball and straight arms, with hands on the ground under the shoulders. Bring the knees towards the chest until the knees are directly under the hips. Extend knees back to push-up position and repeat for 10-15 kick-butt reps.

17.?Hand Off: Work those abs with this tough move! Lie face up on the ground with arms and legs extended. Grab the ball overhead with both hands. In one smooth motion, lift the arms and legs in the air, transferring the ball from the hands to the feet (in between the ankles to be exact). At this point, only the hips and butt should be touching the ground. Lower arms and legs with the ball between them to the ground. Stay strong for 6-10 reps with correct form.

18.?Hanging Knee Raise: Use this move to crunch those hard-to-find lower abs. Place the ball in front of a weight bench or another sturdy piece of furniture. Lie back on the ball, with the shoulders and back touching the surface. Grab the weight bench with the hands and keep the legs pressed tightly together (for a more advanced move, try a free weight). Flex the abs and bring the knees towards the chest, using the arms for stability. 10-15 reps will bring those abs out from hiding.

19.?Ski Step: Wondering where the obliques come in? Try this alpine-influenced move to work the sides of the abs. Sit tall on the stability ball with feet together. In one smooth motion, swing the feet to the right and the arms to the left. Don?t be afraid to get into this move ? the higher the enthusiasm the better the workout! Bring arms and legs back to center and repeat for 12-15 reps, alternating sides.

20.?Side Squat: Finish up an ab-tastic routine with a bit of a stretch. Stand with legs shoulder width apart, grasping the ball overhead with both hands. Keeping theback straight and the abs engaged, bend down bring the ball to the outside of the left foot. Lift the ball again and repeat on the right side. Stay strong (and limber!) for 10-15 reps.

Want your very own stability ball? Here are some great exercise balls to do that (potentially embarrassing) squeeze squat at home!

  • Firm: This ridged ball comes with a workout DVD for even more stability ball exercise ideas; $20.
  • GoFit: A nubbly blue surface will keep this basic ball from getting slippery during a sweaty workout; $20.
  • SPRI Stediball: This weighted ball comes with plastic pellets that can be poured into the ball for a more challenging workout. Prying the plug off was tricky, but after we inflated it the ball was much thicker and sturdier than a regular stability ball; $60.
  • TKO Fitness Ball: Made of special Anti-Burst material, so feel free to use this wherever. We have these bad boys in our office and sometimes use them as chairs; $20.
  • Gaiam?Eco Total Body Balance Ball Kit: This ball had the perfect amount of ?give,? plus grippy bumps around the sides to prevent slipping; $25.

How to Handle Hyperactivity in Kids with ADHD | World of Psychology

How to Handle Hyperactivity in Kids with ADHD Hyperactive kids with ADHD are always on the go, according to Roberto Olivardia, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist and clinical instructor in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. It?s like they have a motor winding them up. ?Words like ?Energizer Bunny,? ?Speedy Gonzalez? and the ?Roadrunner? are common nicknames to describe the?never-ending vessel of energy?ADHD kids exhibit,? he said.

For instance, rather than sitting at their desk, they might jump up several times to sharpen their pencil, said Ari Tuckman, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and author of Understand Your Brain, Get More Done: The ADHD Executive Functions Workbook. Rather than sitting at the dinner table, they might walk around it ? or go and play with the pet, he said.

Physical hyperactivity isn?t the only concern. Hyperactive kids also experience racing ? and ?rarely singular or linear? ? thoughts, Olivardia said. ?The idea of ?shutting their minds off? is a foreign concept to someone who is hyperactive.?

Because of their hyperactivity, kids with ADHD can have a hard time in school, where sitting still is nonnegotiable. ?[They] can miss much of what is taught simply because their brains are not as stimulated when they are still,? Olivardia said. (However, as he said, ?Perhaps the current setup of school, sitting still for 6 hours a day 5 days a week, is the real problem.?)

They also might experience social problems, he said. And hyperactivity ?can lead to more accidents and injuries if the child engages in reckless activities in order to get some of that energy out,? Tuckman said.

Handling Hyperactivity in Kids with ADHD

Parenting a child who?s hyperactive is no doubt exhausting. Tuckman and Olivardia shared these suggestions on how to handle hyperactivity.

Have a clear understanding of hyperactivity.

Being hyperactive is not the same as misbehaving, Olivardia said. Hyperactivity in ADHD is hardwired, he said. ?It is analogous to feeling an intense itch and not scratching it. Even if you don?t scratch it, you?ll be so distracted by wanting to.? In addition to educating yourself, educate your child as well about why they?re hyperactive, he added.

Find other ?fidgets.?

Fidgeting actually helps kids focus and reduce hyperactivity. Olivardia referred to a book called Fidget to Focus, which describes the science of fidgeting and its ability to sharpen attention. He also suggested finding other ways to fidget, such as chewing gum or having an object to manipulate.

Create more engagement.

For instance, teachers can set up desks in a circle or have ?stand-up desks,? Olivardia said. Kids with ADHD are usually more engaged when they?re moving around a bit than sitting still. Get creative, experiment and go with what works, he said.

Ignore the hyperactivity.

?Sometimes the best solution is just to ignore it,? Tuckman said. For instance, when your child is having dinner at home, if they?re eating their food and not misbehaving, let them stand or walk around the table, he said.

Get rid of excess energy.

?You can burn off some of that hyperactivity by allowing the child to be more active before they need to sit still,? Tuckman said.

The important thing is not to fight hyperactivity by telling your child to stop fidgeting, be still or stay seated, Tuckman said. In fact, ?Simply saying ?Sit still? can be invalidating and lead to self-esteem problems in kids with ADHD,? Olivardia said. Instead, help your child channel their excess energy, Tuckman said.

Also, ?Remember that this same kind of energy, which can be a lot to handle as a parent or teacher when kids are younger, is the same kind of energy that can contribute to amazing things as an adult,? Olivardia said. Many entrepreneurs were diagnosed with ADHD as kids, and today, use their energy to brainstorm exciting ideas and run out-of-the-box businesses, he said.

Top 10 Useful SEO Techniques For Business Websites | Lakeshore ...

These tips are in no particular order. You may notice that some are more powerful than others. The older your website domain is then the higher it will rank as time goes by, just so long as you keep it updated frequently. Do not try to cut corners and hire dubious marketing companies or employ Black Hat techniques, because you will lose the ranking you have accumulated over the years. Furthermore, make sure you keep abreast of new SEO developments.

1 ? Link from LinkedIN
LinkedIN was created as a social media for people in business. Link from it to your website, from your profile and from your contributions to comments and forums. You may gain a little bit of traffic from the site, and the search engines will look more highly upon links from LinkedIN if you are an active LinkedIN user.

2 ? Have your staff update it
If you have staff then assign members of staff to spend a little bit of time each week to post updates that are not of primary importance. Things such as commenting on the blogs, answering forum questions, updating facts and figures, updating employee profiles, micro blogs about in-office news. You should update it frequently with bigger issues such as price changes, industry news and promotions.

3 ? Make sure that your business name is a keyword on the home page
The effect of this is often overlooked by the business website because they are too busy worrying themselves over the popular keywords. If you are doing your job correctly, you will have people searching for you online. You may not think that your business name is important because your website is called after your business and your home page has your name on it, but that is not enough.

Your business name needs to be in the keyword Meta tag on the home page. It needs to be in your Meta description twice and needs to be mentioned on your home page at least twice. You must also remember that images with your name on (such as images of your logo with your name on) do not count! Your name needs to be written. Your domain name has less importance that you think.

You can Google your domain name and find that your website is listed as item 2200. You need to optimize your homepage for your business name. The last thing you need is for people to Google your business name and come across 200 reviews of your services and products before they get to your site.

4 ? Submit your sitemap xml to Google
It is the best way to have every page on your site indexed at the same time.

5 ? Keep it simple (KIS)
Use an external CSS file; make sure your Java Scripts are clean through referring off page via an external file. Use Flash like an image (only) and don?t use frames.

6 ? Make your internal linking comprehensive BUT intelligent
Comprehensive means a link to the major junctions of your site from the home page, it means a sitemap, and means at least three links on every page. Include keywords in your internal link anchor text and don?t try to hide links.

7 ? Update frequently
If your business does not churn out chunks of text for a living then you may have trouble finding things to update your website with, but even things such a jewellery shop can update with gold prices, stock prices, blogs, price changes, up and coming offers and industry news.

8 ? Swap links with business partners, business friends and people who you do not mind advertising
Many people link to their suppliers if their suppliers have a trade only policy. The prestige of having their link and logo on your site is good; it is also good if they link to you too. It benefits both your online credibility and your website SEO. You may even gain direct link followers from the other websites.

9 ? Steal Keywords from your competitors
Of all the tips on this article, this is the second most powerful. People spend a fortune on research for keywords so that they can get to the top spot. All you need to do is Google your hottest keywords and you will find a results page full of your competitors. Look at the web pages and source code and steal their keywords. They did the hard work and paid the money?and you benefit.

10 ? Link check your competitors
This tip has been saved until the end as a reward for the people who have the tenacity to read articles to the end. This is the most powerful SEO secret. Google your hottest keywords and you will find a results page full of your competitors. Note down their URL, go to http://ahrefs.com/ and click ?search links.?

Click on the tab that says ?external links? and there you will find a list of all the sites linked to the URL. All you need to do is follow each one and get yourself linked from the same pages (which will help you greatly in plonking your site right next to the ones on the top of the search engine results). Ahref is good, but only allow 5 free searches per day.
