Toni Nagy: Gavin McInnes' How to Piss in Public

To write a compelling memoir you either have to be an inexhaustible writer who can tell a story about even the most mundane events, or have had a totally extreme fantastic life so outrageous that a baboon proficient in sign language could tell your tale. It is a difficult genre because people are not only judging whether you can maintain a compelling narrative, but also whether your life was worth living. It is my favorite category to read because I happen to think I am my most interesting subject to write about, and I dig other egomaniacs who have the same vibe.

Gavin McInnes's memoir How To Piss in Public is one that I highly recommend, for it not only achieves its goal of being insanely hilarious in a mental hospital sort of way, but it is also so outlandishly offensive that you get tricked into thinking it is totally politically correct. McInnes is the type of person that can get away with saying whatever he wants, because he takes everything to such an extreme you assume he can't be serious even if he is. How to Piss in Public is filled with antics that will make you feel like your time earth is comparable to that of Mr. Rogers, and his brash style will hold you by the throat, forcing the words down your gullet. Despite the gagging, you appreciate the content.

If you don't know who Gavin McInnes is, he is one of the funniest guys on the internet who you also sometimes want to punch. I am a big fan of his videos which have a subtle humor that does require some brain activity, but in my opinion that makes them all the more brilliant. I am a fan of thinking. But if you haven't seen these vignettes of comedy, Google him to find out all about his hipster past, Vice Magazine and blah blah blah, but I find his videos, like "chappies," "eating the world's hottest pepper," and how "bars are not for women" to be more worth your time. If you are looking for cool guy credibility, McInnes is oozing with it, but if you were really cool you wouldn't care about his coolness because you know that being uncool is actually the new cool -- so, whatever.

Now I am not one of those girls who is dumb enough to think that I and that guy staring at my tits "are just good friends," but crawling into McInnes's brain and spending a few hundred pages there, I am not sure women and men are even the same species anymore. I am pretty sure I am not McInnes's intended audience, mostly because I have one of those vaginas he often parallels to a variety of different sandwich meats. I am not a big fan of calling women "sluts" and "whores" -- but then he does describe some pretty slutty situations, so I get it. I decided getting caught up in the semantics of what is seemingly sexist was a waste of time, because I genuinely believe that is not where he is coming from. He is being honest about his life experience even if I may not have ever wanted to know what goes through a punk teenager's head while he is getting it. His sexcapades may be raw and shocking, but I think he respects women who earn his respect just the same as men. He is hard on everyone who acts whack, and is easy to give praise to those who he thinks deserve it.

Even if guys may relate more, chicks can still get into this book and find it as amusing as unicorn farts, but I will say there are some stories you will never be able to un-remember. The majority of his content is the average human experience: losing your virginity, drugs, drinking, love, work, friendship and family -- it is just taken to the next level Grand Theft Auto-style. McInnes's main goal with How to Piss in Public was probably to make people laugh more than exposing some meaningful life lesson, and he without a doubt accomplishes that. But a book is more than a string of jokes put together, and in order for something to be interesting enough to finish, there has to be some other narrative thread pulling you along. A byproduct of his humorous agenda is that beyond the crassness, there is a lot of wisdom that is relevant for generation xyzqw or whatever we 80s babies are. Life is not handed to you; it takes work, creativity, dedication and innovation. Eventually you have to grow up and prioritize things besides the party, but that is okay, because you will want to. Being mature doesn't have to be about sacrifice and becoming lame, because if you have lived your youth without fear you will be ready to move on.

Villagers: Afghan slayings were act of retaliation

John Henry Browne, the lawyer for Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, questioned the military's case against his client. Bales is accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians, many of them children. NBC's John Yang reports.

By The Associated Press

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Residents of an Afghan village near where an American soldier is alleged to have killed 16 civilians are convinced that the slayings were in retaliation for a roadside bomb attack on U.S. forces in the same area a few days earlier.

In accounts to The Associated Press and to Afghan government officials, the residents allege that U.S. troops lined up men from the village of Mokhoyan against a wall after the bombing on either March 7 or 8, and told them they would pay a price for the attack.

The lawyer for Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, who is accused in the March 11 killings of the 16 civilians, has said that his client was upset because a buddy had lost a leg in an explosion on March 9.

It's unclear if the bombing cited by attorney John Henry Browne was the same as the one described by the villagers that prompted the alleged threats. After a meeting at a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Browne said Bales told him a roadside bomb blew off the leg of one of his friends two days before the shootings occurred.

Inquiry targets 'command climate' in Afghan killingsA spokesman for the U.S. military declined to give any information on the bombing or even confirm that it occurred, citing the investigation of the shootings. He also declined to comment on the allegation that U.S. troops threatened retaliation.

"The shooting incident as well as any possibilities that led up to it or might be associated with it will be investigated," Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said Tuesday.

Bales, 38, is suspected of leaving a U.S. base in Panjwai district of Kandahar province, entering homes and gunning down nine children, four men and three women before dawn on March 11 in the villages of Balandi and Alkozai. Mokhoyan is about 500 yards (meters) east of the base.

The shootings have further strained ties between the U.S. government and President Hamid Karzai who has accused the U.S. military of not cooperating with a delegation he appointed to investigate the killings.

Karzai's investigative team is not convinced that one soldier could have single-handedly left his base, walked to the two villages, and carried out the killings and set fire to some of the victims' bodies. The U.S. military has said that even though its investigation is continuing, everything currently points to one shooter.

The U.S. military does not release information on incidents such as roadside bombings if no coalition troops are killed so it has been impossible to independently confirm the eyewitness accounts.

Ghulam Rasool, a tribal elder from Panjwai district, gave an account of the bombing at a March 16 meeting in Kabul with Karzai in the wake of the shootings.

"After the incident, they took the wreckage of their destroyed tank and their wounded people from the area," Rasool said. "After that, they came back to the village nearby the explosion site.

"The soldiers called all the people to come out of their houses and from the mosque," he said.

"The Americans told the villagers 'A bomb exploded on our vehicle. ... We will get revenge for this incident by killing at least 20 of your people,'" Rasool said. "These are the reasons why we say they took their revenge by killing women and children in the villages."

Naek Mohammad, who lives in Mokhoyan, told the AP that he was inside his home when he heard an explosion on March 8.

"At first I thought it was an airstrike," Mohammad said. "After some time I came out and talked with my neighbor. He told me that there was an explosion on NATO forces."

Mohammad said that as the two discussed the incident, two Afghan soldiers approached them and ordered them to join other men from the village who had been told to stand against a wall.

"One of the villagers asked what was happening," he said. "The Afghan army soldier told him 'Shut up and stand there.'"

Mohammad said a U.S. soldier, speaking through a translator, then said: "I know you are all involved and you support the insurgents. So now, you will pay for it ? you and your children will pay for this.'"

Mohammad's neighbor, Bakht Mohammad, and Ahmad Shah Khan, also of Mokhoyan, gave similar accounts.

The U.S. soldiers arrived in the village with their Afghan army counterparts and made many of the male villagers stand against a wall, Khan said.

"It looked like they were going to shoot us, and I was very afraid," said Khan. "Then a NATO soldier said through his translator that even our children will pay for this. Now they have done it and taken their revenge."

Several Afghan officials, including Kandahar lawmaker Abdul Rahim Ayubi, said people in the two villages that were attacked told them the same story.

Mohammad Sarwar Usmani, one of several lawmakers who went to the area to investigate the shootings, said that after hearing accounts by villagers, he believed their assertions that the slayings were carried out by more than one gunman and that they were in retaliation for the bombing.

Usmani also said that the Afghan National Army had confirmed to him that an explosion occurred near Mokhoyan on March 8.

Abdul Salam, an Afghan soldier, showed an AP reporter in Panjwai district on March 13 the site of the blast, which made a large crater in the road. The soldier said the explosion occurred three days before the shootings. Salam said he helped gather the men in the village, but that he was not close enough to hear what the troops said to them.

The identity of the soldier who allegedly threatened the villagers is not known.

A Word From Our Sponsor On Understanding What Flood Insurance ...

You may be surprised to find out that your homeowner?s insurance does not cover certain natural disasters. For instance, standard homeowner?s insurance policies do not provide coverage for loss or damages resulting from a <a href=?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood? title=?Flood?>flood</a>. In order to obtain this coverage, you will have to purchase a separate <a href=?http://www.vreelandinsurance.com/personal-insurance-new-jersey/flood-insurance/? title=?flood insurance New Jersey?>flood insurance New Jersey</a> policy.

Doing so is wise, especially if you live in a floodplain. That said, not all losses or damages resulting from a flood are covered, even in a <a href=?http://www.vreelandinsurance.com/personal-insurance-new-jersey/flood-insurance/? title=?flood insurance New Jersey?>flood insurance New Jersey</a> policy. Let?s discuss what is typically covered in a standard flood insurance policy.

Structural damages and generally covered. This means that damage to your walls and foundations are covered. Structural damage clauses also include electrical systems, plumbing systems, and central air, and heating systems. Carpeting, cabinets, drywall, and flooring are generally included, as are many large appliances. In additional, this section of a standard flood insurance policy will also cover the removal of debris.

Personal property loss is also typically covered in <a href=?http://www.vreelandinsurance.com/personal-insurance-new-jersey/flood-insurance/? title=?flood insurance New Jersey?>flood insurance New Jersey</a> policies. This includes items such as clothing and furniture, along with valuables such as jewelry or artwork. Household electronics such as computers, stereos, and handheld devices are typically covered. Often food that is rendered inedible is also included in coverage. Of course, all of this coverage only reaches to the monetary limits outlined within the policy.

Metro Internet Explorer 10?s Share Charm Could Be A Critical Feature

handyMicrosoft has just posted an overview of the Windows 8 version of Internet Explorer 10, which shows off the features you'd expect from a modern touch-based browser: navigation gestures, full-screen content, and the expected Metro-style multitasking. The one feature that caught my eye, however, was the "share charm." Charms are, as you must surely know, the little contextual items that appear when you swipe in a menu from the right side of the screen in Windows 8. Search and settings are there, naturally, and function as expected (the Start one is inexplicably still called Start). The Share one, however, is more powerful and forward-thinking than I was expecting.

Dietary patterns exist among US adults based on demographics

ScienceDaily (Mar. 13, 2012) ? Scientists say they have identified five eating patterns for U.S. adults that are strongly influenced by age, race, region, gender, income and education.

Presenting their findings at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2012 Scientific Sessions, the scientists said the five dietary patterns are:

  • Southern -- fried, processed meats, and sugar sweetened beverages
  • Traditional -- Chinese and Mexican food, pasta dishes, pizza, soup and other mixed dishes including frozen or take-out meals
  • Healthy -- mostly fruits, vegetables and grains
  • Sweets -- large amounts of sweet snacks and desserts
  • Alcohol -- proteins, alcohol and salads

They based the patterns on results of food frequency questionnaires of 21,636 black and white adults ages 45 and older. This 110-food-item questionnaire was designed to estimate the usual and customary intake of a wide array of nutrients and food groups.

"We believe focusing research on dietary patterns better represents how people eat, compared to single foods or nutrients," said Suzanne Judd, Ph.D., study author and assistant professor of biostatistics at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

The researchers also found clear differences in dietary patterns across demographic and socioeconomic groups:

  • Blacks were more likely than whites to eat a Southern dietary pattern.
  • Men, people making less than $35,000 a year and those who weren't college graduates were more likely to follow the Southern pattern of eating than women, those who made more money, or those who were more educated.
  • Blacks tended to not eat the alcohol dietary pattern.
  • People ages 45 to 54 tended to eat a traditional dietary pattern.
  • Those 75 years and older were likely to not eat the traditional dietary pattern.
  • College educated adults tended to not eat the Southern dietary pattern.

"We hope that understanding these patterns will be informative in understanding the role of diet in health and disease disparities," Judd said.

Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer

Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are odd devices. They're helmets or glasses you wear on your head that show you a display that, if scaled back, would be the equivalent of a very large screen seen from a distance. Despite the obvious fashion ramifications, back in the 90s, they were the harbingers of virtual reality, and the idea of going into the Internet with a helmet on seemed like the future. Now, they're little more than novelty items. Still, with its OLED screens, 3D support, surprising comfort and excellent picture, the Sony HMZ-T1?is the best HMD I've seen. Unfortunately, with just a single HDMI input and no other options, a separate processor that needs to be plugged into a power outlet, and a $799.99 (direct) price tag, it's still a novelty, and not a good HDTV replacement unless you want a big screen in a really, really tiny space (that only you can see).

Design
The head-mounted display itself looks like a very bulky visor, glossy white and framed in matte black. A padded nosepiece, forehead piece, eyepieces, and headphones make it feel comfortable. A blue light below the front-and-center Sony logo indicates that the display is on, and is showing a picture. Two sliders under the HMD adjust focus, and a direction pad with a Menu button, volume controls, and a Power button sit to the right of them, on the underside of the visor.?It weighs a solid 14.8 ounces, though, so it's not exactly baseball-cap light.?

The HMD plugs into the processor unit, a 1.4-by-7.1-by-6.6-inch (HWD) deck that weighs 1.3 pounds and looks like a miniature Blu-ray player. The processor has no physical controls, but the front holds the HMD output and around back there's an HDMI input and outputs. The Personal 3D Viewer only accepts HDMI, so if you want to connect your Nintendo Wii or a VGA/DVI-only PC, you're out of luck (or have to get an adapter for the DVI output). You can watch any high definition content through HDMI, though, including TV from a cable box, Blu-ray discs, and gaming on a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or PC if it has HDMI-out. Because of this, it's a working display for a small living space, but you can't take it anywhere and watch anything without cable juggling.

Picture
Sony claims the Personal 3D Viewer shows a picture equivalent to viewing a 750-inch projection screen from 65 feet away. Remarkably, that seems to be an accurate assessment. The simulated screen isn't simply because two ultra-sharp OLED screens are right in front of your eyes, but because they're arranged in such a way to give the impression of depth. I'm nearsighted, and when I first put the device on it, the picture was extremely blurry. It became clear only after I put on my glasses, meaning my eyes were registering these small screens inches from my eyes as several dozen feet away. It effectively offers a much larger picture than a 42-inch HDTV viewed from a couch eight feet away.

It accomodated my glasses surprisingly well, with no pinching against my face. Getting the Personal 3D Viewer to fit comfortably on your head can take some work, and it's not something you can easily slip on and off. Two head straps are connected to an arm on either side which can pull in or out of the body of the headset. First you have to adjust the straps, then you need to push the arms in until it fits snugly. This makes the headset feel more comfortable and secure on the face, but it means putting it on and taking it off is a small chore.

I played Mass Effect 3 and Motorstorm Apocalypse on the Sony PlayStation 3 through the Personal 3D Viewer, and I was suitably impressed. The cut scenes in Mass Effect 3 looked relatively cinematic, as if I was playing the game in an empty movie theater. Even without 3D, the graphics offered a surprising amount of depth, because the limited plane of focus made the foreground or background look sharp while its opposite number is blurry. When the camera settled on main character Commander Shepard and the background was out of focus, it really looked like Shepard was popping out of the screen.

The 3D effect in Motorstorm Apocalypse was also impressive. The game showed excellent 3D depth and sense of speed, and the two screens in the Personal 3D Viewer showed separate enough pictures to produce a 3D image. Movies showed slightly less intense 3D separation, but with all 3D content it depends on the material.

For a 2D movie, I watched the Blu-ray of Priest, and was satisfied with the picture. We can't perform our usual lab tests on the Personal 3D Display because of its form factor, but black levels looked appropriately dark and highlights looked bright and detailed. Colors seemed accurate, and a handful of picture settings let you adjust it.

The Personal 3D Viewer has "simulated 5.1-channel surround," but in practice it just has stereo earphones and dubious audio processing. In trying to reproduce the ambient 3D noise in Mass Effect 3, the headset presented some occasionally bizarre stereo separation, and never quite gave me the impression of being surrounded by crew members and humming engines. Additionally, the headset only accepts LPCM stereo and 5.1-channel sound; if you usually use the more common Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1 audio tracks, you'll have to tell your Blu-ray player to output in LPCM, not Dolby or DTS (most Blu-ray players automatically output in one or the other, depending on the disc).

As a standalone product, the Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer is an impressive example of a head-mounted display that can produce a great picture and really give you the impression of watching a huge movie screen. However, it's still a $800 device for one user and one HDMI source at a time. The lack of non-HDMI inputs mean you're limited in what you can watch without getting adapters, the separate processor and power requirement keep it from being portable, and the straps keep it secure on the head at the cost of making it easy to put on or take off. If you live in a very tiny, closet-sized apartment it's a great, inexpensive way to have a big-screen HDTV for yourself, but it doesn't offer a feasible replacement for an actual HDTV that takes multiple sources and lets many people watch.

Celebrity Endorsements: Jeff Foxworthy Backs Mitt Romney

He already loves the cheesy grits. He has perfected the twang in his "y'all." But with only one more day to beef up his Southern street cred before the Alabama and Mississippi primaries Tuesday, Mitt Romney is calling in the blue-collar cavalry.

Self-proclaimed Redneck comedian Jeff Foxworthy joined Romney on the Alabama campaign trail today after endorsing the GOP candidate via Twitter last week.

"Time for Republicans to unite behind Governor Romney, a great leader who can win the White House and rebuild our economy for all Americans," Foxworthy tweeted Thursday.

The "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" headliner most famous for his "you might be a redneck" jokes went out on the stump to support Romney amid a torrential downpour in Mobile, Ala., Monday before traveling to two additional meet and greets in Biloxi, Mississippi and Richland, Mississippi.

Foxworthy is the latest in a long line of celebrities that have thrown their star power and fundraising prowess behind a presidential candidate this year.

From pop stars and Hollywood hunks to super models and reality-TV divas, here's a look at some of the celebrities who've chosen a side in the 2012 fight for the White House.

Ted Nugent

Hollywood may be leaning toward President Obama, but the rockers seem to be picking Mitt. Ted Nugent is the second rock star in the past week that has come out in support of Mitt Romney, after Kid Rock made a guest appearance on the Romney campaign trial to play his song "Born Free" last week.

Nugent announced his endorsement on Twitter, telling his 44,000 followers "after a long heart&soul conversation with MittRomney today I concluded this goodman will properly represent we the people & I endorsed him."

Nugent, who is from Michigan but now lives in Texas, told the Texas Tribune on Friday that prior to deciding on his endorsement he spoke with Romney over the phone to make sure the former Massachusetts governor would not enact any gun law restrictions and would help reign in what he dubbed the "out of control" U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"The conclusion based on all the evidence I can find is that Mitt Romney has the best shot at bringing the U.S. Constitution, common sense, and the American way back to the White House," Nugent told the Tribune. But Romney was not Nugent's first choice for president.

"It is my firm belief that Rick Perry would have [made] and would make the best president we could choose," Nugent said, adding that he was baffled by Perry's debate performances. "If the real Rick Perry had been at those debates, he would still be in the race."

Kid Rock

Kid Rock found his presidential jam the day before his home state's voters found their polling places. The rapper-turned-country-rocker belted out "Born Free," Mitt Romney's official campaign song, at the presidential candidate's final Michigan rally before Romney's home state voted February 28.

While the musician did not actually endorse Romney, he insisted on a personal meeting with the GOP candidate before he agreed to take the stage at Romney's rally.

"The other day I got in my car and I drove out to a home of a fellow that lives in this area, and I asked him whether he might come here tonight," Romney said before introducing Kid Rock. "He said, 'If you're elected president, will you help me help the city of Detroit?' I said I would. And then I turned to him, and I said, 'By the way, given the fact that I'm willing to do those things, will you come here and perform a concert tonight for my friends, and he said he would."

Rock's pseudo-endorsement represents a change of heart for the music star. During the last presidential race, Rock, whose real name is Bob Ritchie, said celebrities should keep their political opinions to themselves.

"I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics," he told CMT Insider. "Because at the end of the day, I'm good at writing songs and singing. What I'm not educated in is the field of political science. And so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people of who I think they should be voting for ... I think would be very irresponsible on my part."

Rock went on to say that celebrity endorsements actually "hurt politicians."

"As soon as somebody comes out for a politician, especially in Hollywood, when they all go, 'I'm voting for this guy!' ? I go, 'That's not who I'm voting for!'" Rock said in the 2008 interview.

Bill Maher

While another comedian makes a mockery of Super PACs, liberal jokester Bill Maher put $1 million worth of support behind the pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA.

Maher said he decided to write the mega-check to Priorities "partially out of fear?fear of Santorum and Romney," who he said live in a "bubble of insanity."

"Half the country is nuts, and Obama could very well lose," Maher told the Los Angeles Times after announcing his donation on Friday. "He may not have been the best president in his first term, but given the alternative, I feel there's a clear choice.

"Unless the rich liberals get into the game," Maher added, "Obama will be horribly outspent. If he is outspent, he stands a good chance of losing."

Maher told ABC News that he hoped his hefty donation would inspire other wealthy Democrats to do the same. "Hey, rich liberals," he said. "If I can do this, there's a lot of people who can do it even easier."

Eva Longoria

To say that actress Eva Longoria is an Obama supporter would be a glaring understatement.

Not only has the "Desperate Housewives" star publicly announced her support for the president and held high-dollar fundraisers to fill his election war chest, she is one of two big names in Hollywood who signed on to be one of 35 "ambassadors" for his re-election campaign.

Longoria will spearhead efforts to reach women and Hispanic voters leading up to the 2012 election, Obama's re-election campaign announced today. Kalpen Modi (aka Kal Penn) is the only other actor on the list.

Prior to a high-dollar fundraising dinner with the president in September, Longoria told Jimmy Kimmel that Obama has been "very receptive" to her in her efforts to promote Latino issues.

"I'm a big Obama supporter no matter what he's been through -- he's been beaten up the past couple of years," Longoria said, according to the Huffington Post. "He's been very receptive for me, I'm a big advocate for Latino issues, and so he's been a big listener and he's done a lot of coalitions and roundtables regarding what we want changed."

Longoria helped raise between $200,000 and $500,000 for Obama's re-election in 2011 and in she helped inspire additional online donations in December when the Obama campaign raffled off a dinner with the actress to five online donors.

Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris' endorsement of Newt Gingrich was nearly as epic as the decades of jokes about his larger-than-life persona.

"Civilization is on the brink," Norris wrote in a WND.com editorial. "We need a veteran of political war who has already fought Goliath, because he will be facing Goliath's bigger brother. [Gingrich] is the best man left on the battlefield who is able to outwit, outplay and outlast Obama and his campaign machine."

Since his endorsement, Gingrich has anointed Norris as a member of the GOP candidate's "Faith Leaders Dream Team," a group of what he calls "fearless Christians" who serve as Gingrich's "official advisory coalition on issues pertaining to life, marriage, and religious liberty," according to his campaign website.

Donald Trump

If you ask Donald Trump, the most important endorsement of the GOP primary was Donald Trump's, which he bestowed on Mitt Romney after a whirlwind of rumors that the real estate mogul was going to pick Newt Gingrich.

Trump officially announced his endorsement in the Trump International Hotel on the Las Vegas strip shortly before the Nevada Caucus.

"Mitt is tough, he's smart, he's sharp, he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love," Trump said. "So, Gov. Romney, go out and get 'em. You can do it."

Vince Vaughn

Hollywood humor met primary politics when actor Vince Vaughn endorsed Rep. Ron Paul while introducing him at the Liberty Political Action Conference in September.

"Ron and Vince are friends, with Vince not merely interested in Dr. Paul's philosophy but he also graciously invited Dr. and Mrs. Paul to the premier of his film 'Couples Retreat,'" Paul's campaign manager Jesse Benton said in a statement, according to Slate.

Vaughn is a long-time supporter of Paul, having endorsed his 2009 book "End the Fed," as well.

Stephen Spielberg

Having a three-time Academy Award winning director on your side is not only good for morale; it's also great for fundraising. Director Steven Spielberg donated nearly $150,000 to Democratic election efforts in 2011, including $5,000 to Obama's campaign and $100,000 to pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

While Spielberg is a long-time supporter of the Democratic Party, he was not one of the original Hollywood Obama-backers. During the 2008 Democratic primary, Spielberg endorsed Obama's opponent Hillary Clinton.

Cindy Crawford

Supermodel City Crawford was a firm supporter of Barack Obama in 2008, with both she and her husband contributing the federal limit to the Illinois senator's presidential campaign.

But in 2012, the model-turned-actress is putting her bet on Mitt Romney. Crawford appeared in an early campaign video for the former Massachusetts governor, although her spokeswoman told CNN at the time that Crawford was "not politically aligned with any party or candidate" and merely doing a favor for one of Romney's sons, whom she was friends with.

Kelly Clarkson

While Pop star Kelly Clarkson has not officially endorsed Ron Paul, the original "American Idol" winner tweeted some Ron Paul Revolution love to her 1.1 million followers back in December.

"I love Ron Paul," Clarkson tweeted. "I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination, and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican Party in 2012, he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't."

Clarkson's tepid support ignited a deluge of 140-character criticisms from her Twitter fans, many of whom were apparently unhappy about racist newsletters Paul sent out during his decades-long tenure as a Texas congressman.

Clarkson later apologized to her Twitter fans for throwing her support behind Paul.

"I am really sorry if I have offended anyone," Clarkson tweeted. "Obviously, that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite."

In an interview for Rolling Stone in March, Clarkson said she was flabergasted by the instant outrage that her political-themed tweet incited.

"I'm hanging out with my brother and my little niece, playing Barbies, and Ron Paul comes on TV," she said according to Politico. "He doesn't BS around anything. I was like, 'This dude is refreshing.' All I did was tweet what I thought, and people went crazy! All of a sudden people were like, 'You hate gay people'?what? I didn't even endorse him! All I said was that I liked him. I voted for Barack, so it's not even like I'm a hardcore Republican."

Michelle Branch

Apparently pop stars flock together when it comes to presidential endorsements. Shortly after Kelly Clarkson tweeted her support for Ron Paul, fellow pop princess Michelle Branch retweeted her supported, writing "@kelly_clarkson I wholeheartedly agree. #RonPaul"

Branch is best known for her early 2000s hits "Breathe" and "All You Wanted."

George Clooney

Actor George Clooney was an Obama supporter before being an Obama supporter was cool. In a 2006 interview with ABC's Kate Snow Clooney said then-Sen. Obama was "the most charismatic person I've been in a room with in a long time."

"I must tell you, I've never seen anybody in my life in person that was as qualified this young to do what I think we need done," Clooney said.

And six years later, Clooney is still a firm Obama supporter. Clooney was on the guest list at a $35,800 per person fundraising dinner in Los Angeles during the president's West Coast fundraising spree last week.

"I'm disillusioned by the people who are disillusioned by Obama, quite honestly, I am," Clooney said on ABC News Now's "Popcorn with Peter Travers" before the October release of "The Ides of March," a political movie that he wrote, directed and starred in. "Democrats eat their own. Democrats find singular issues and go, 'Well, I didn't get everything I wanted.' I'm a firm believer in sticking by and sticking up for the people whom you've elected."

Gene Simmons

Gene Simmons, the bassist in the rock band Kiss, chose team Romney last month, telling Big Hollywood that Romney has the best chance of beating President Obama.

"Who's got a chance? Mitt Romney's got a chance and he's got the experience," Simmons said in the Big Hollywood interview. "He's run successful companies, knows how to make money. I believe Mitt Romney and President Obama are going to have a very good dialogue, and I want to hear that dialogue."

Joe Perry

In what is becoming typical rock star fashion, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry used Twitter to tell the world he was voting for Ron Paul.

"Obama hasn't done anything close to what he promised he'd do," Perry tweeted in January. "Didn't get my vote and I got lotta grief. Well, my votes for Ron Paul."

Pat Boone

The 1950s singer, actor and author Pat Boone, 77, threw his support behind Rick Santorum earlier this month, saying in a statement that Santorum is "experienced, honest and deeply principled," according to Politico.

"I am excited to endorse Rick Santorum for president. I've known Rick for many years, and Rick has been a consistent defender of conservatism and the values our great nation was founded upon," Boone said in a statement released by Santorum's campaign.

Boone, who's rendition of Little Richard's "Tutti Fruiti" sent him to the top of the Billboard charts, is an outspoken critic of President Obama. He told the San Francisco chronicle in September that he believes the president was born in Kenya, is a Muslim and is "spending millions" to hide his real birth certificate. Each charge was refuted after Obama released both his certificate of live birth and long-form birth certificate.

Snooki

The Donald might not be running for president, but if he was, he would enjoy the backing of one of his fellow reality-TV superstars, Snooki. The "Jersey Shore" diva, whose real name is Nicole Polizzi, told the Huffington Post last month that Donald Trump would be her pick for president.

"I thought Trump was going to run," Snooki told the Huffington Post. "But he's not, right? I would endorse him and vote for him."

Chill from the north cools west, south India

Met officials say that eastward movement of a western disturbance has led to a change in wind direction over northwest and central India leading to surprise cold conditions.

NEW DELHI: Post Holi, northwest India would have been expecting temperatures to rise. Not only was this part of the country surprised by the cool weather, several parts of west and south India including coastal regions were also stumped at the unseasonal chill. Interestingly, the north has been singularly responsible for the weather down south.

Met officials explained that the eastward movement of a western disturbance (WD) had led to a change in wind direction over northwest and central India. These cold and dry northerly winds, particularly strong this time, were also experienced over large parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and even as far as Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. "This is not unheard of but is an uncommon phenomenon. In fact, this is the second time this year that a WD placed over J&K has caused cold weather over west and south India," said BP Yadav, director, IMD.

Shortly before Holi, northwest India witnessed a sharp rise in temperatures. The maximum crossed 30 degrees and the minimum was 5-7 degrees above normal. This was during the presence of WD over the western Himalayas. Met officials say that during the impact of a WD, wind direction changes to south/southeasterly. These winds are warm and moist and if the WD does not bring rain, temperatures tend to shoot up. The relief came shortly before Holi, when the WD started moving away. Its eastward movement brought another change in wind direction. Cold winds from the north started blowing over the area, bringing a sharp fall in temperatures.

Most states saw temperatures starting to fall around March 7. Cities across the country including Mumbai, Patna, Bhopal, Ahmedabad and Lucknow saw temperatures fall to 2-5 degrees below normal in the next two days.

On March 7, minimum temperatures fell by 6-7 degrees over Punjab and Haryana and 2-5 degrees over Himachal Pradesh, west UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat, coastal and interior Karnataka, north Assam, Meghalaya, TN, Telengana and Chhatisgarh.

However, with another WD set to affect western Himalayas for the next three days, the mercury is expected to rise by 3-4 degrees over northwest and central India. Respite from the chill will also be experienced in most of the country.

Pelosi: Fluke&#39;s $3000 Contraception Testimony &#39;Factual&#39;?Despite $9 ...

Nancy Pelosi

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (AP Photo/Lauren Victoria Burke)

(CNSNews.com) ? House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that the testimony Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke gave Pelosi on Feb. 23 in the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee was ?factual? and that she has ?a great deal of respect? for it.

Fluke testified that contraception can cost a law student $3,000 over three years, when in fact the Target store just 3 miles from the Georgetown Law School campus sells a month?s supply of birth control pills for only $9 to people whose insurance does not cover contraception.

At the U.S. Capitol, CNSNews.com asked Rep. Pelosi, ?Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke?she told Congress that contraception can cost over $3,000 for a woman during her time in law school. Yet the Target store 3 miles away sells a supply of birth control pills for $9 a month to women who do not have health insurance. Was her testimony accurate??

Pelosi said: ?I have a great deal of respect for the testimony that Sandra Fluke presented to Congress. She was factual, she was courageous and she made a difference in the debate and in the country, and we were honored by her presentation.?

Fluke had appeared before Pelosi in the all-Democratic committee to testify in favor of the Obamacare regulation that requires all health care plans in the United States to cover, with fees or co-pay, sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives including those that cause abortions. The U.S. Catholic bishops and many Catholic lay leaders, joined by many Protestant and Jewish leaders, have objected to the regulation saying it is an attack on religious liberty because it forces Catholics, and those who share their religious convictions on these things, to act against their faith.

Fluke testified, ?Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that?s practically an entire summer?s salary. Forty percent of female students at Georgetown Law reported to us that they struggled financially as a result of this policy.

?One told us of how embarrassed and powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter and learned for the first time that contraception was not covered on her insurance and she had to turn and walk away because she couldn?t afford that prescription,? said Fluke. ?Women like her have no choice but to go without contraception.

? Just last week,? Fluke said, ?a married female student told me that she had to stop using contraception because she and her husband just couldn?t fit it into their budget anymore. Women employed in low wage jobs without contraceptive coverage face the same choice.?

?You might respond that contraception is accessible in lots of other ways,? Fluke told the Democratic panel. ?Unfortunately, that?s not true.?

However, as CNSNews.com has confirmed, a Target store pharmacy 3 miles from the Georgetown Law campus in Washington, D.C. sells the a one-month supply of the generic form of the birth control pill Ortho Tri-Cyclen for $9. Target offers Tri-Sprintec, which is the generic form of Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

In addition, a CVS pharmacy two blocks from the law campus sells the same monthly supply of pills for $33 per month.

Entertainers Sticking Up for Science: The Help We ve Been Pleading For?

In magazine reporting (and maybe science blogging), they say three events suffice to indicate a trend. So let me announce a new trend: popular entertainers are sticking up for science. Here are three trendsetting entertainers turned notable science advocates.

Actor Alan Alda wrote an editorial in Science last week launching a science communication contest to be judged by 11-year olds. He challenged scientists to write an explanation of what a flame is ?that an 11-year-old would find intelligible, maybe even fun.? Alda is also a founding board member of the Center for Communicating Science.

Icelandic pop singer Bjork gave a series of shows at the New York Hall of Science this February in support of her latest album, called Biophilia. She also helped develop a series of classes for middle school students on scientific concepts mentioned in the album, like crystalline structures, lunar phases, and viruses.

Last summer, rapper Will.i.am from the Black Eyes Peas used his own money to co-produce a back-to-school TV special called ?I.am FIRST ? Science is Rock and Roll? promoting education, science and technology. In the process, he successfully goaded singer Rihanna into tweeting ?science is dope? to her more than seven million followers.

Alan, Bjork, and Will.i.am: thank you for joining our cause, sharing your hope for America, and spreading the good word about science to a wider audience than most of us could ever hope to reach alone.

Of course, the bulk of our task to restore science to its rightful place in American society remains ahead of us. But I wonder if the good work done by these stars signals the beginning of a deep change in our culture. Is science starting to become cool again?

On the one hand, the outlook for science looks bleak. Last month, Nina Fedoroff, president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), said that she was ?scared to death? by the anti-science movement. ?We are sliding back into a dark era,? she said, as reported in the Observer. ?And there seems little we can do about it. I am profoundly depressed??

But on the other hand, signs of a cultural shift toward interest in science might be appearing all around us. For example, you may have noticed that Natural History has infiltrated home decorating. Last year, a shop called ?Curiosity? Intriguing Objects for the Home? opened in my neighborhood in downtown Baltimore. The store sells antique star maps, pieces of coral, and brass magnifying glasses?the accoutrements of a fin de si?cle science museum. Across the street from Curiosity, Shofer?s furniture store is displaying glass Bell jars and large Audubon-Society-style prints of jellyfish and sharks.

Maybe science really is becoming cool again, or maybe the trends above are just fads. But I?ve started to think that the recent celebrity interest in science is partly our own doing. Maybe celebrities tend to sympathize with struggling groups that show a kind of helplessness, like AIDS victims, endangered animals, and abandoned children. And maybe scientists have been seeking that kind of sympathy, consciously or unconsciously.

Let?s take another look at how Nina Fedoroff spoke to the press in her new role as AAAS president. Federoff has a lot to be proud of, and you might expect her tone to reflect that. She founded and directed the organization now known as the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State University. She has received the John P. McGovern Science and Society Medal from Sigma Xi and the National Medal of Science. But she said, ?I am profoundly depressed,? and ?there seems little we can do about it?; this is not the usual bearing of a scientific leader or hero. To borrow a bit of marketing terminology, I would describe the archetype of her brand as the needy orphan. She?s purposefully sending the world a message of helplessness.

Federoff joins a chorus of scientific voices begging for aid. A report from the Union of Concerned Scientists came out this February called, Heads They Win, Tails We Lose: How Corporations Corrupt Science at the Public?s Expense. And you?ve probably heard of the 2010 report from the National Academies Press called Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited: Rapidly Approaching Category 5. The titles of these reports imply that scientists are victims of a tempest, fighting a losing battle. Fortunately, there are celebrity philanthropists ready to be heroes to our victim.

Branding scientists as orphans, as a kind of endangered species; that?s probably not a marketing strategy I would have suggested we employ. But at the moment, in Hollywood, it seems to be working.

AnchorGrid is close to launching! Need some quick input - Traffic ...

We have spent over 7 months in development, and we are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

For those of you that don't know what AnchorGrid is, it's a "BMR-like" network that steps up the game dramatically.

While we could not have foreseen the recent updates in Google - this has given us a great opportunity to launch something to the public that will be truly valuable amidst all the chaos right now.

I won't go over all the features right now, but I can tell you that it will be the type of network that will stand the test of time with Google.

We have a smaller 500-600 site private network that we use to test different variables, and that we plan to carry over on to the public network. None of those sites have been deindexed, and have risen in PR at every update. And we've literally ranked medium-to-high competitive phrases on page 1 with only a handful of these links.

Anyhow - to make a long story short - we have decided to split up some of our network into different "categories." This means, the links you will be getting will not only be from relevant articles, but from highly relevant sites. Your "forex/investing" articles will not be on the same site as "puppy training" or "fat loss" articles.

Input We Need From YOU:

All I need from you guys, is some input on those categories. We have put up a very rough draft of the categories that we are including (I posted the list below). If you do not see a relevant category where you can put your links, please let me know so we can include it.

Please PM me your category if you do not see it on the list. I know a lot of you will not be comfortable putting out your categories on a public forum.

The Category list:

1) Electronics Gadgets and Technology (computers, gaming, consoles, game reviews, cell phones, tv's, etc)

2) Pets (pet training, pet food, animals, etc)

3) Finance (money, credit, loans, investment, insurance, real estate)

4) Health (fitness, medical, ailments, sports, beauty, self improvement, addictions, etc)

5) Home and Family(home improvement, babies, parenting, kids, cooking, food, gardening)

6) Education and Reference (colleges, online schools, financial aid, areas of study, books)

7) Travel and Leisure (vacation, cruise, airlines, resorts, traveling, tourism, outdoors)

8) Relationships (dating, love, marriage, wedding)

9) Shopping, Fashion, Products (fashion, product reviews, shopping, jewelery)

10) Business and Marketing (Internet Marketing, SEO guides and tactics, blogging, affiliate, home based businesses, etc)

Study pinpoints effects of different doses of an ADHD drug; Finds higher doses may harm learning

MADISON New research with monkeys sheds light on how the drug methylphenidate may affect learning and memory in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The results parallel a 1977 finding that a low dose of the drug boosted cognitive performance of children with ADHD, but a higher dose that reduced their hyperactivity also impaired their performance on a memory test.

"Many people were intrigued by that result, but their attempts to repeat the study did not yield clear-cut results," says Luis Populin, an associate professor of neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.

Populin was senior author of the new study exploring the same topic, now available in the early access section of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, published last week. In the study, three monkeys were taught to focus on a central dot on a screen, while a "target" dot flashed nearby. The monkeys were taught that they could earn a sip of water by waiting until the central dot switched off, and then looking at the location of the now-vanished target dot.

The system tests working (short-term) memory, impulsiveness and willingness to stick with the task, as the monkeys could quit "working" at any time, says Populin. The study used different doses of methylphenidate -- the generic name for Ritalin -- that were comparable to the range of clinical prescriptions for ADHD.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost 5 percent of American children are taking medications for ADHD.

Strikingly, dosage had a major and unexpected impact. "At a low dose, the performance scores improved because the monkeys could control their impulses and wait long enough to focus their eyes on the target. All three were calmer and could complete a significantly larger number of trials," says Populin, who collaborated with Jeffrey Henriques and graduate student Abigail Rajala on the study.

At the higher dose, "performance on the task is impaired," Populin says, "but the subjects don't seem to care, all three monkeys continued making the same errors over and over." The monkeys stayed on task more than twice as long at the higher dose, even though they had much more trouble performing the task.

Although ADHD drugs are commonly thought to improve memory, "If we take the accuracy of their eye movements as a gauge of working memory, memory was not helped by either dose," says Populin. "It did not get better at the lower dose, and there actually was a small negative effect at the higher dose."

Memory is at the root of many intellectual abilities, but it can be affected by many factors, says Bradley Postle, a professor of psychology at UW-Madison.

Postle, an expert on working memory who was not involved in the study, says methylphenidate affects the brain's executive function, "which can create an internal environment that, depending on the dose, is either more or less amenable to memory formation and/or retention. If you can concentrate, and are able to process information without being interrupted by distracting thoughts or distractions in your environment, you will perform much better on a memory test. Apparently, the lower dose of methylphenidate helped create the conditions for success without actually improving memory itself."

Monkeys are not people, but monkeys in the study still reminded him of school children, Populin says.

"They made premature movements, could not wait to look at the target before they could be rewarded for doing so. It's like a kid where the teacher says, 'When you complete the task, raise your hand.' But he can't wait, even if he knows that by responding prematurely he will not get rewarded," he says.

The study results had another parallel with daily life, Populin says. Drug dosages may be set high enough to reduce the characteristic hyperactivity of ADHD, "but some children say that makes them feel less creative and spontaneous; more like a robot. If learning drops off as it did in our study, that dose may not be best for them. Our monkeys actually did act like robots at the higher doses, keeping at it for up to seven hours even though their performance was so low."

The logical way forward would involve a similar study with people diagnosed with ADHD, Populin says. With millions of children, and an increasing number of adults, taking medicines for the condition, "We have to be very careful about finding the right spot on the dose curve, or we may get changes in behavior that we don't want. People think these drugs help improve memory, but our data say, 'No, your memory is not getting better.' At the higher dose, you get a behavioral improvement at a price, and that price is cognitive ability."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is keeping up a schedule of weekly visits to politically important states with a trip Wednesday to North Carolina.

Obama will be in the state the morning after Super Tuesday. He's talking about the economy and jobs at a Daimler truck manufacturing plant in Mount Holly, near Charlotte. It's his first visit to a foreign automaker, but bears a familiar theme. The White House says the president will highlight the government's fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks.

Obama promoted his energy agenda in Florida and New Hampshire over the past two weeks.

Obama narrowly carried North Carolina in 2008, becoming the first Democratic presidential nominee to do so since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Charlotte is the site of this summer's Democratic National Convention.
